“You offered her food because you wanted to be nice, but if something goes wrong, she’ll blame you and demand compensation. There's no way to prove yourself innocent.”
“Even if you’re sure it’s safe, if she claims your food made her sick, what can you do?”
Ethan started to say something, but the words just wouldn’t come. Isabella was right, and he knew it.
“The Lane family has their own chef. If Natalie wants something, she can ask the chef to make it. If that’s not good enough, she can eat out, or have her husband cook for her. Or you can go and cook for her yourself.”
“I’m not going over there to cook for her. She can eat or not, it’s not my problem if she’s hungry.”
Ethan stared at her, silent.
“Don’t give me that look. Your charm doesn’t work on me.”
“Isabella, I’ll pay you. If Natalie eats your ribs and says she feels sick, I promise I’ll stand up for you.”
He was still trying to convince her to make BBQ ribs for Natalie. What else could he do? Natalie had specifically asked for Isabella’s cooking.
“Ethan, this isn’t about money, and your promise doesn’t mean anything. You’re not Natalie, you’re not Jordan. If something really happens, you won’t be able to protect me. Honestly, you might even be the first to turn on me.”
“I’ve told you, ever since you tricked me into this marriage, my trust in you has dropped straight to the bottom.”
“The bouquet, take it back. The pastries, take them too. I don’t want any of it.”
Isabella stood up and headed for the door.
“Isabella, where are you going?”
Ethan jumped up instinctively and reached out to stop her.
Isabella peeled his hand away, walked to the office door, opened it, and made a gesture for him to leave.
