Ethan sat on the edge of the bed, just watching her for a long while. When he finally got up, he left the bedroom quietly and made his way to the living room. He flopped down onto the sofa and pulled out his phone, dialing Frank’s number.

“Ethan, you’re still up? It’s pretty late,” Frank said.

Ethan shrugged, even though Frank couldn’t see him. “Late? For us, this is nothing. Aren’t you up too?”

Frank let out a tired laugh. “Yeah, I just got home, actually. Took a shower and was about to crawl into bed. Trying to get some decent sleep for once. Monday’s coming, and work’s just waiting to swallow me whole.”

He let out a sigh. Sometimes he wondered how much longer he could keep up this pace. He wished he could retire like the older folks in his family, just travel around and do whatever he wanted, never having to think about business again. But that kind of life was decades away. His parents had always said he couldn’t even think about retiring until he got married, had kids, and raised them to take over for him. Just like he’d done for them.

Frank didn’t even have a girlfriend yet, so who knew when he’d have kids. The Adams family hadn’t seen a new baby in years. Now that Ethan was married, everyone had kind of expected something, but Isabella hadn’t shown any signs of starting a family. Frank had a feeling she never would. To Ethan, Isabella was just someone to use, a pawn in a much bigger game.

“Did you call for a reason? You’re wondering about the numbers for Isabella’s web series, right? The data’s real. I didn’t help her promote it or boost the views,” Frank said, already guessing what Ethan wanted to talk about. Lately, Ethan seemed more interested in Isabella than before.

Maybe Isabella would really end up as his sister-in-law, Frank thought. But then he remembered how Ethan still pined for Natalie, and his hopes faded. Honestly, none of them thought Natalie was right for Ethan. No one knew how she’d gotten to him in the first place, but once Ethan fell for someone, he never let go. Natalie had been dating Jordan for years, but Ethan still hadn’t moved on. He’d even married Isabella just to have a reason to see Natalie more often.

Frank decided not to overthink it. Whatever Ethan wanted, it was his business, and even their elders couldn’t control him. Frank would just watch from the sidelines.
