Mia kept her eyes on the road, pretending Sophia wasn’t even there.
“You didn’t even try, Mia. Seriously, when did you become such a pushover?” Sophia scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She had been looking forward to a showdown between Mia and Isabella, hoping they’d tear each other apart.
It’s not like Sophia liked Mia much, but if she had to choose, she’d rather see Mia with Ethan. At least Mia would sometimes let her have her way. Isabella, on the other hand, never gave her the time of day. She acted like Sophia didn’t even exist.
And honestly, Mia was a better match for Ethan. Isabella couldn’t even hold a candle to her. She was basically invisible, couldn’t land a job at The Lane Group after college, and was hardly any better than a housekeeper. How could someone like that ever deserve Ethan?
“Listen, Sophia. I’m not giving up. I just have some self-respect,” Mia replied, her tone icy. “Ethan and Isabella are still married. If I got with him now, I’d just be the other woman. Why would I do that? It’s not like I can’t get married. Why should I be someone’s dirty little secret? I could find a guy from a good family and have a real marriage. Why would I settle for sneaking around?”
Sophia opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She had no comeback for that.
“I’m going to talk to Jennifer, too,” Mia went on. “I’ll tell her to drop the whole idea. I’m not getting between Ethan and Isabella. If they ever get divorced, it’s not going to be because of me.”
