Laura wandered over to the door, peeked outside for a second, then came back in and asked, “What’s this two hundred million thing you mentioned? Ethan looked seriously pissed.”
“Let him be mad. Honestly, I hope he gets so fed up with me that he finally asks for a divorce.”
Isabella reached for a bottle of water from the stash she kept for the renovation crew. She twisted the cap off and took a long drink, finishing half the bottle before she started to explain.
“Jennifer invited me out for coffee.”
Laura rolled her eyes. “As if she actually wants to have coffee with you. She’s never liked you. It’s gotta be something else.”
“Exactly. She offered me a check for a hundred million to divorce Ethan. I said it wasn’t about the money, so she upped it to two hundred million.”
Laura’s jaw dropped. Isabella gave her a look.
“I was honestly tempted,” Isabella admitted. “Part of me wanted to take the money, figure out some way to get Ethan to agree to a divorce. But Jennifer wouldn’t give me the money up front. She said I’d get it after the divorce went through. I didn’t trust her. She’s double-crossed me before.”
She let out a slow breath. “I have to watch my back. If I cross Ethan, he’ll make sure I end up with nothing. He’s powerful enough to ruin me if he really wants to.”
“Unless I had a bunch of cash hidden away, enough to live on for a while, I couldn’t risk it. The money wasn’t guaranteed, so in the end, I turned down Jennifer’s two hundred million. Laura, two hundred million! People like us couldn’t make that in three lifetimes.”
“I just had to watch it slip through my fingers.”
“And since Ethan is the one refusing to divorce, it’s basically his fault I lost that money. I came back here furious. No way could I be polite to him.”
