Ethan came over, grabbed a chair, and set it behind Cynthia. He wiped it down with a tissue, then looked at her and said, “Mom, have a seat.”
Cynthia looked pretty pleased with how thoughtful her son-in-law was. As soon as she sat down, though, she shot Isabella a glare.
“Mom, why are you staring at me? I didn’t do anything,” Isabella protested.
Ethan stood next to Cynthia, looking like he’d just been deeply wronged.
Isabella glanced from her mom to Ethan. “Ethan, what did you tell her?”
“Mom, you see how she treats me?” Ethan said, putting on his most pitiful face. “I offered to go furniture shopping with her, even said I’d pay, but she got all sarcastic and told me to get lost. I was just trying to help, but it’s like no good deed goes unpunished.”
Isabella just stared at him, speechless. He actually tattled on her. To her mom. She’d only snapped at him a little, did he really have to go and complain like a little kid?
“Isabella, if you’re in a bad mood, go somewhere private and scream it out. Don’t take it out on Ethan,” Cynthia scolded.
“He’s just trying to take care of you. Why are you dumping all your frustration on him?”
“And what kind of business deal is worth two hundred million? If you couldn’t close it, it was never yours in the first place. You can’t blame Ethan for that. It’s not like he stole the money from you.”
“Look at poor Ethan. The minute I walked in, he looked like he was about to cry. I’ve watched him grow up, and I’ve never seen him look so miserable.”
Cynthia really had known Ethan for years. He and Jordan grew up together, and as Jordan’s stepmother, she’d always seen Ethan as the golden child. In her eyes, he could do no wrong.
“Apologize to Ethan. And later, let him go furniture shopping with you. If he doesn’t know something, just teach him. He’s willing to put himself out there for you, and you should be happy about that.”
Isabella opened her mouth to explain, but her mom didn’t give her a chance—just launched right into a long speech about marriage and communication.
