"Miss, where did that handsome guy who bought you the kite go? He was really cute."
A little boy had seen Harold buying the kite for Isabella, and clearly, he was still thinking about it.
Isabella smiled and reached over to gently pinch the boy's cheek. "You noticed that? That was about an hour ago. He really was very handsome, and he was super nice too, but he went home already. You know, you're a good-looking kid yourself. When you grow up, you'll be just as handsome as him."
The boy blushed, but he seemed even happier to play with her after that. Even though Isabella was at least ten years older than the kids, she fit right in. Her smile was so warm and easygoing that all the parents felt comfortable letting their children hang out with her.
Suddenly, a cold voice cut through the fun. "Who bought you that kite?"
Isabella jumped, startled. She glanced around and realized Ethan was standing right behind her. She hadn't heard him at all. Did he always move so quietly? He was practically a ghost. And what was he even doing here? Wasn't he supposed to be off charming Natalie?
"Ethan, what are you doing here?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
He shot back, "Is this your private property? Am I not allowed to be here?"
She shrugged. "Of course not, it's a public place." In her head, she couldn't help but think, Someone's in a mood today.
He didn't let up. "Who was that handsome guy the kid mentioned? The one who bought you the kite. Are you out of money or something? You needed someone else to buy you a two-dollar kite?"
Ethan had clearly seen everything. The fact that another man had bought her a kite definitely got under his skin. His face was stormy and his tone was sharp and icy.
"Miss, who is this man? He's scary," one of the kids whispered, glancing up at Ethan with big eyes. The way the boy called Isabella "Miss" and Ethan "man" made them seem like they were from two different generations.
