“Ethan, seriously, you’re accusing me?” Isabella gave a dry, sarcastic laugh. “If anyone in this marriage is going to cheat, it’s definitely you.”
“I already told you, I won’t cheat on you as long as we’re still married.” She sounded calm, almost bored. “If I ever fell for someone else, I’d wait until after our divorce. I’d date him openly, marry him without hiding a thing. Why sneak around?”
“Isabella Lane, I told you. Stop talking about divorce,” Ethan replied, his voice colder than the ocean breeze.
She didn’t back down. “I ran into your two best friends at the villa gates, Harold Carter and Jesse Mason. They happened to be here on vacation, too. We bumped into each other and walked together for a bit. I wanted to buy a kite, and Mr. Carter paid for it. I tried to pay him back, but he said forget it. After that, I came here to fly my kite, and they went home. That’s all.”
Ethan froze, caught off guard. He hadn’t expected Harold to be the one who bought her the kite. Funny how his friends were here at the beach too, yet somehow he hadn’t been invited. He felt a sharp twinge of annoyance. They were supposed to be his friends, too. Then again, he knew Harold and Jesse were closer with each other, and to be honest, neither of them liked Jordan. Ethan and Jordan had grown up together, and that had always been a sticking point.
“Ethan, Isabella, what are you two talking about? You both look so serious.” Natalie Gates came over, holding onto Jordan’s arm, her smile bright and effortless. Even before she reached them, her voice floated over.
“Ethan, you’re not picking on Isabella, are you? That won’t fly with us here. If you make her upset, you’re making us upset, too.”
Natalie acted like she was ready to go to bat for Isabella. Technically, she and Jordan were Isabella’s family now.
