"And that’s exactly it," Isabella shot back. "You told me not to expect your love. If I can’t hope for it, why should I bother loving you? Loving you just means setting myself up for heartbreak."
"Ethan, I listened. Everything you said to me on our wedding night, I remember it all, and I’ve been working on myself. So relax, I won’t love you. Not now, not ever. I want to live my life, not suffer, not end up miserable just because I care about you."
Ethan had nothing to say.
Seeing him so quiet, Isabella couldn’t help herself. "What’s wrong? Upset that I don’t love you anymore? Feeling abandoned?"
After a long silence, Ethan finally managed to say, "Good. That’s for the best."
"Exactly, it’s for the best. So why do you get to call me out for changing? For not loving you or caring about you? Do you even want my love? Do you want me to care?"
Ethan stared at her, unable to answer. He wanted to say no, but the words just stuck in his throat. He couldn’t say anything.
"Don’t be so greedy, Ethan."
"I…" He had nothing left.
"Alfred!" Isabella called out.
The butler hurried in, glancing between the two of them. He could instantly sense the tension and saw Ethan’s stormy face. Had they been fighting? He noticed the cut on Ethan’s lip but decided not to ask.
"Mrs. Lane, how can I help you?" he said politely.
