After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 85

Alfred grabbed the first-aid kit and pulled out a thermometer for Ethan.

But Ethan wasn’t having it. He barely looked up. “Just get me some warm water,” he muttered. “I’ll drink more and be fine.”

Alfred poured him a glass, hovering nearby. “Sir, please, let’s check your temperature. If you have a high fever, you might need some medicine. Should I call the doctor?”

Ethan shook his head, stubborn as ever. He could face almost anything, but the thought of medicine or needles turned him into a sulky kid. “No doctors. No medicine. No shots. I don’t want my temperature taken. I’ll just drink hot water, that’s all I need.”

He drained the glass, then slumped back against the couch, eyes closed. The fever was exhausting. He knew if he actually checked, his temperature would probably be sky-high.

Since Ethan wouldn’t cooperate, Alfred didn’t dare call the doctor on his own. He stood there, helpless, then quietly slipped outside. He wanted to call Isabella, but realized he didn’t have her number. This was Ethan and Isabella’s first time at the beach house, and as newlyweds, no one had her contact info yet.

After thinking it over, Alfred decided to call Susan, the main housekeeper back at the estate. When Susan answered, he quickly asked for Isabella’s number and told her about Ethan refusing to see a doctor.

Susan sounded resigned. “Calling Isabella won’t help. She can’t convince him. I heard Natalie’s also at the beach. Go ask Jordan for help instead. And don’t bother Natalie directly, or Jordan might get upset.”

Susan understood Ethan too well. He was crazy about Natalie Gates, but he’d never want to mess up her marriage to Jordan Lane. He wanted them to be happy, even if it meant suffering in silence himself.

“I’ll go to Mr. Lane right away,” Alfred promised.
