Sienna:
The second the office door clicked after we walked inside, after Giovanni left, I felt something inside me break. I felt like the whole world under me crumbled, and like I was smaller than I ever was.
I didn’t care that Damon was there. I didn’t care that we were still at work, or that the walls might have ears. I turned away from him, pressing a hand against the desk to steady myself, because if I didn’t, I was sure my legs would give out.
I knew that they would no longer support me, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to straight. No matter how hard I was going to try, this was far too painful for me to be able to handle.
That man.
That monster.
The one who haunted my nightmares, who left shadows in every corner of my life.
And he had the nerve to show up today, to walk in like he hadn’t shattered everything I had ever known.
“Are you okay?” Damon’s voice was quiet, careful. Like he didn’t want to startle me.
I turned to face him slowly, my throat burning. “You should have let me kill him. You should have at least allowed me to put him in place.”
His brows furrowed. “Sienna…”
“No.” My voice cracked, and I hated it. I hated how broken I sounded. “You should have let me do it. Do you know how long I’ve waited for a moment like that? To finally face him. not as some scared girl, not as a pawn in his sick games, but as me. As Sienna, the woman who has grown, the woman who is not weak, and the woman that he cannot keep taking advantage of. And you, you stood in front of me like I couldn’t handle it. Like I needed protection from him. You didn’t even allow me to say my mind. You didn’t even allow me to speak.”
“I was protecting you from yourself,” Damon said gently, stepping closer. “From what that rage could have turned into. There are humans, you know that we cannot put them in danger.”
“I’m tired of being protected, I am done with that behavior, Damon.” I snapped. “I’m tired of people deciding what’s best for me, of you deciding when I can fight and when I can’t. You say I’m your Luna. Then let me act like one. Let me put him in place. He killed my mother. The man killed my mother. He burned a building. He almost killed yours and you. And if not for her
”
I forced myself to stop as I raised my hands to my hair, pulling on my roots.
He didn’t flinch. Didn’t raise his voice.
He did not even speak.
Instead, he stepped forward, closing the distance between us and pulling me against his chest without asking. He held me in his arms as if showing me that he was the one person that could keep me safe.
I swallowed hard, breathing in the scent of him, letting it calm the shaking in my chest.
“You’re not alone in this, Sienna,” he added, his hand cupping the side of my face. “Not anymore. And nothing, nothing, he does will change what you are to me.”
“I want him dead, Damon.”
“And he’s going to take his last breath, one way or the other. Very soon, he’s going to take his last breath. And if he thinks that he’s going to be able to get away with it, then he is very wrong.” He said softly. “For now, I’m just going to need you to regather restaurant. I am going to need you to be able to stand because what you are doing is just going to weaken you.” His thumb brushed a tear from my cheek.
“My Luna,” he said softly, almost reverently. “My mate.”
I closed my eyes, leaning into his touch.
Maybe I was still angry. Maybe the storm inside me wasn’t done raging.
But in his arms, for just a moment, I felt like I could breathe again.
