Alpha Damon (Sienna) novel Chapter 184

Sienna:

I told myself I was just taking a walk.

I told myself that I just needed a break, that I was going to be all right, that this was just a moment of weakness where I needed to find myself.

I took a deep breath as I walked down the western corridor, where the windows were tall and the sunlight poured in like warmth through cold glass. I smiled at the sight of the city. It was giving me peace to know that at least I was away from all the chaos that was going on downstairs.

Damon had left early for a meeting with Carter and Ethan. I didn’t ask what it was about, though I had a feeling it wasn’t the kind of thing he wanted to discuss over breakfast. Not when his expression had been so grim. Not when he kissed me like he didn’t know how many kisses we had left.

And I didn’t ask… because I wasn’t ready for more answers.

Because I was not ready for what was to come.

I just knew that being in the office now did not give me peace. It was as if I was waiting for a danger to lurk around the corner.

So I walked. I just kept walking away from all the responsibilities, temporarily forgetting the titles that I had, forgetting that I was a Luna. I just needed a break to be Sienna, to be who I was away from all of this, from all the hate, the rage, the anger.

I paused near one of the carved stone archways, letting my hand drag across the rough edge. The wind through the window was cool, but my skin prickled for another reason.

A whisper in my gut.

Something was off.

“You’ve been quiet.”

I turned.

One of the maids, Mira, stood behind me. A gentle soul. Always polite, always watching. Knew that she was not always pure. She was Lysandra’s personal maid and though I wanted to fire her at first, I did not have a reason to do so.

She was sent to the office to work here rather than the park house, but after I started working here, I did not realize how deeply Sandra has threaded within the pack and outside when it came to Damon’s life. But I also knew that I should have expected it. She’s been his lover for years.

“Have I?” I asked, my voice softer than I intended.

She nodded. “Since the other day… after the announcement. I figured you’d be happy. Most of us wondered why you’ve been quiet, but I figured that you might have something on your mind.”

“I am,” I replied. “But sometimes the things you want most still carry a weight you weren’t expecting. There’s a lot that I’m now carrying and it’s all very new to me.”

I need to thread my words carefully. I did not know how much she was going to be giving out as information. I did not know if she was still working for Lysandra, and even if she was, at least giving a few answers would spare the woman her head.

She tilted her head, like she understood. “You’re stronger than they think, Luna.”

I didn’t reply to that.

I didn’t feel strong. I felt watched.

And I was right.

“Miss De Luca.”

Let Delilah try.

Let her show her teeth.

That’s her try and play a game. And I was going to show her that I did not need anyone to protect me.

Because I wasn’t going to hide in Damon’s shadow. Not now. Not ever again.

We made our way through a lesser-used hallway near the northern quarter of the office, an old part of the estate rarely walked through. The air was colder here, and the windows were smaller, letting in little light. I stayed alert, every step echoing louder than it should’ve. My pulse was steady, but my wolf stirred beneath my skin.

I was being lured.

And I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise.

One of the men paused before a closed set of double doors. “She’s inside.”

I didn’t reply. I simply walked forward, pushed the door open… and stepped into the dim room.

“Thank you for not making this more difficult than I believed that it would already be.” She said, her voice low as she anticipated what was to come.

“Speak of what you have to say and get out, else trust me, this is not going to end well, neither for you nor the men that are here serving you…”
