Alpha Damon (Sienna) novel Chapter 194

Sienna:

I walked out of the nursery knowing that I was going to go to the room and yet not able to go to their room. Something in me told me that I needed to go elsewhere. I couldn’t be in the room by his side, not yet.

Not when I could not confront him with what I had in my mind. Not when a thousand words were threatening to spill and yet neither one of them was going to serve what I wanted to say without being understood in a way that I knew would turn things against me.

The sterile scent of the infirmary greeted me the moment I stepped in. It was oddly quiet, the soft beeping of machines the only sound to break the stillness. I didn’t know why I was here, why I needed to come. But something inside me demanded answers, and Delilah was the only one who could give them to me.

The woman who somehow managed to play a bond that I did not think to be playable.

I found her in the far corner, lying in a bed, pale but awake. Her arm was bandaged and her shoulder wrapped tightly, the faint scent of blood still lingering. Her eyes met mine the moment I approached. There was no surprise in them. She had been waiting for me.

“I was wondering when you’d come,” she said quietly. “I thought that you would come sooner considering that you would want to demand answers.”

I stopped beside her bed. “Don’t act like we’re about to have a conversation over tea. You know why I’m here. Demanding answers is very little to what I want to do right now.”

She gave me a small smile. Tired. Worn. Almost amused. “Of course I do. You can do whatever it is that you want to do as far as you are concerned. I am laying on this bed injured and have very little will to fight.”

I folded my arms. “You lied. You played a game, one that put Damon, the pack, and me at risk. You masked your scent. You made his wolf think you were something you weren’t. Why did you do all of this? Not only did you play a game on him, on us. But you chose to sabotage something that was so pure real. Why?”

Delilah didn’t flinch. She only looked away, toward the window, where daylight filtered in faintly through the blinds. She wrapped an arm around herself, and for a moment I could have sworn that I saw guilt in her eyes, but that guilt was quick to disappear as it was replaced by calmness.

“I had no other way,” she said. “You think I enjoyed it? Pretending like that, manipulating the bond? Do you really think that I like playing around like this? That I liked living my life training for something that was so cold and vile?” Her voice wavered, but only slightly. “It wasn’t for me. It was never for me. It was for something bigger. I did not care about him. Yes, I was impressed by the fact that he was so smart. He is smarter than those that have dealt with and trust me, I’ve dealt and have been around dirtier men in my life. All of them easily gave in. A small smile was easily enough to fool them.”

I stepped closer. “You made him believe you were his mate. Do you understand how dangerous that is? Do you understand what that could have done?”

“I just needed you to know,” she added, “that you were never replaced. Not for a second. And no one was ever going to take her place. Hell, I don’t even know if he would spare another woman a second glance. Whether or not you were around.”

I stood there in silence, my throat tight, before nodding once and stepping back. “You need rest. Heal. We’re not done yet.” And with that, I turned and walked away. But her words followed me, trailing behind like a shadow, faint, but impossible to forget.

He never gave in.

He chose you.

Even in my doubt, that mattered.
