I know that already.”
“But what you may not know,” Nikolai said, “is that this war? It won’t just be yours to fight. Everyone around you will pay for it. Your daughter. Your mate. And you’ll have to ask yourself what you’re willing to sacrifice. Because Giovanni is not going to stop. He knows that he is powerful. He’s not doing it for a simple power.”
My fists clenched. “If you’re not here to help…”
“I didn’t say I wasn’t. I’m sending Delilah and Lysandra to you. They’re safer under Damon’s roof than anywhere else.” He said, stopping me. “While I am aware that you wouldn’t want to do so, it is something that I am asking you to do because I know that there is no other place where they would be safe.”
That caught me off guard. “Why? I don’t understand. They chose to go to Giovanni. They chose their side.”
“Because I’ve seen what Giovanni does to the women he raises. And I’ve seen what you’ve survived. You’re not like the others. You don’t cower. You stand. So let them stand with you.” He said, taking a breath. “He’s going to take their lives and he’s going to do it without caring whether or not they carry his blood.”
The door slammed open.
Damon’s presence filled the room like a tidal wave. His voice cut like a blade.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Nikolai turned calmly. “Relax, Alpha Lockwood. This isn’t a challenge. I am here because I needed help and the one person that I could think about speaking to first is your woman. Considering that it includes women coming to your pack.”
Damon looked at me, studying my expression and 900 letting him know to go on. I was not under threat, at least I believed that I was not.
Sparks pulsed through the air as Damon stepped forward. “Then get the hell away from her.”
“I came to deliver a message,” Nikolai said smoothly. “You’re the only one who can protect Delilah and Lysandra. Whether you like it or not, they’ll be safer in your territory. Giovanni won’t stop until they’re dead. He has assigned me to kill Delilah and he will not stop until he manages to break something in Lysandra, that he’s already doing. And if she does not break down, she does not lose herself to his control. He is going to kill her too.”
“I don’t take orders from men who hover between enemy and ghost.”
I nodded. But the truth was, I didn’t know.
Because if Nikolai was right… this wasn’t the storm.
It was just the warning wind.
“They’re going to need help.”
“I know the question is, are we willing to offer it?”
I looked at him for a moment before he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me to his chest, hugging me tightly. “We do not close the door and the faces of those that request our help, no matter who they might be…”
