Sienna:
“Never did I think that I would be more than happy about her going to sleep.” I said, pinching the bridge of my nose after our daughter fell asleep. She has been giving me a rough time, not wanting to go to bed, but I also knew that she was exhausted and if she did not get her sleep she was just going to end up being fussy in the morning.
The one problem was explaining to her that she needs to go to bed was impossible. She was nothing more than a baby and she was excited to see both her parents by her side.
Her tiny breaths soft against the lull of the evening. I stood over her crib for a moment longer than necessary, brushing my fingers along her dark curls, reluctant to let the peace of this moment slip away. Damon came up behind me, his hand resting on the small of my back. No words. Just his touch.
“You say that you want her to go to bed and then you end up missing her when she’s asleep for far too long.” Damon said, and I laughed.
“She is our daughter, how can I not miss her when she falls asleep? Sometimes I think that she needs to wake up a little more to stay around for me to be able to enjoy these cuddles, these gentle moments that others I want her to go to bed, I want her to rest.” I said, and Damon smiled.
“She is indeed growing very fast.” I said softly.
“She’s perfect,” I whispered.
“She’s you,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to my temple. “The angelic side of you. The purity of you. Sometimes I doubt that she got any good qualities out of me.”
“She did. Her strength, her determination, the will to keep fighting despite everything. She got it from you.” I said, looking at
Damon.
“I don’t think so. I believe that she got her stubbornness from you, the way that she would frown and glare even though she’s a baby.” I laughed, shaking my head at him.
We didn’t speak again as we walked back to the bedroom. The door clicked shut softly behind us, and Damon turned the lock without a word. I felt his presence before I saw him, warmth radiating from him like he was made of fire, but one that wouldn’t burn me. One that pulled me in. One that made me feel small, willing, and loving.
I turned slowly, my breath catching as our eyes locked. My heart raced against my chest and I smiled when he put his finger under my chin.
“I saw you today,” he said quietly. “On the floor with her. The way that you spoke to her, it reminded me of everything that is good, despite all this war that we are in.”
His voice was low, thick with something I couldn’t name. Longing. Gratitude. Love.
“And what did you see?” I asked, stepping toward him, slowly, as if I were the one about to catch flame.
“I saw my world,” he said. “And I saw that I didn’t deserve either of you. But I want to spend every damn day trying. Because I know that I wouldn’t be able to hold on without you. I know that I wouldn’t be the man that I am today without you.”
He held me down gently, devouring me with practiced patience. Slow licks. Gentle sucking. Drawing every sound from me until I was shaking, my fingers buried in his hair.
When I cried out his name, he came back up, his mouth finding mine again, letting me taste myself on his lips. He entered me in one long, slow stroke, filling me completely.
We moved together in perfect rhythm, his body pressed to mine, his forehead resting against mine as we breathed each other in. Every thrust was deliberate, grounding. He didn’t rush. Didn’t demand.
He made love to me like it was a vow.
When release finally crested over both of us, it wasn’t violent. It was deep. Full. Like we were falling apart and coming back together all at once.
After, he pulled me into his arms, wrapping the blanket around us. I laid my head against his chest, listening to his heart.
“I don’t want anything else,” he whispered into my hair. “Just you. If I can stay in your arms like this. If I can hold you day and night, have you hold me, not move from this position, and just have this peace… I wouldn’t change it for the world.” And for the first time in so long, I believed him.
