“Tatiana?” Damon asked sharply. “Is she behind this?”
Carter nodded slowly. “She came to me. Or through me. I don’t know. Her voice… it was everywhere. Like she was in my head. Controlling it. Warping it. She was too strong to stop. She was doing her best to try and bring them in. She called for me through a child first, I tried to find that kid, nothing. Then it was a woman calling for help. And suddenly, she was just inside my head.”
I took a step forward. “So she used you.”
Carter met my gaze. “She broke me. She broke through me in a way that I couldn’t fight.”
My lip curled. “Not good enough.”
“Ethan,” Damon warned.
But I didn’t stop. I stepped closer, grabbed the bars. “You betrayed us. You let her in. Delilah almost died. Half the pack could’ve been lost. And all you can say is she broke you?”
“What do you want me to say?” Carter shouted. “That I liked it? That I wanted it? That I let her in because I thought it was right? I didn’t choose this!”
“I don’t care what you chose.” My voice was low now. Quiet. Dangerous. “You let her hurt her. You let her get to Delilah. And now she… she doesn’t even know who she is anymore.”
Damon put a hand on my shoulder. “That’s enough. Delilah is not the main concern here. In case you’ve forgotten, there is a whole pack that was harmed, people who died, and trust me. I don’t give two fucks about who Delilah is to you, there are other people who are important here.”
I said without looking at him. “Because if I don’t say it, no one will. Someone has to fight for something that they see as worth it, and I am fighting for her.”
“You say you didn’t choose this,” Damon said, turning back to Carter. “Fine. Then prove it.”
“To who?” Carter spat. “To you? To him? Because if I am going to try and prove it to Ethan, you know for fact that he wouldn’t give me a chance to listen. He is clouded by the fact that she heard what he said to the point where he refuses to listen to anything that is beyond whatever bullshit he’s having on his mind.”
Damon stepped back. “If she’s watching, then let her watch.”
I raised an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean? She is putting her daughter’s life in danger, do you really just expect me to sit and bargain something like this?”
“I am not expecting you to wait or to bargain. I am saying that we need to move.”
“What the hell are you talking about, Damon?”
“We are going to need to be ready for whatever is to come. But first, your girlfriend is going to have some serious explaining to do…”
