Tatiana’s voice dropped, almost tender. “Because you are mine. Whether you accept it or not. I am choosing not to accept your sister as she is not worthy. She’s too smitten by that man, Damon. Not only has he managed to mark her, but she has also given him a child, A mistake that you did not do. Then again, they did tell you that you can’t have one, did they?”
For a moment, Delilah tensed. She did not say a word. It was as if her mother’s words, if I could call her that, open discard that she was trying to hide, a pain that she was trying to under. But then she took a breath and deafened up.
“No.” Delilah shook her head. “You lost the right to say that when you tried to take control of me. When you hurt the people I love. And if you think that Sienna was wrong, then you are the one who is mistaken. As far as I’m concerned, you chose to have two children and not only one.”
“A mistake that I made. I do not want you to make the same one. A child means weakness.”
“Does that mean that I am your weakness? That Sienna is as well?”
I looked at her then, really looked. The way her shoulders rose and fell. The way her hands clenched at her sides like she was trying to keep the rage from breaking her bones.
Tatiana took a single step forward.
Delilah flinched, just slightly. I moved closer.
“I gave you strength,” Tatiana whispered. “I gave you purpose. It is a shame that you’re using it against your own self. You’re using it against your own good.
“You tried to turn me into you,” Delilah spat. “And I’d rather be broken a thousand times over than become what you are.”
Silence.
Then, like lightning splitting the air, the mist surged toward her.
I launched myself forward without thinking. We hit the ground hard, my back to the forest floor, her body pressed against mine as I shielded her. My blade clattered to the side.
“Are you okay?” I asked, voice rough.
She looked up at me, stunned, breathing hard. “You’re insane. You could have gotten hurt, Ethan.”
“I’m consistent.” I said, smirking as I looked down at her.
We stayed like that for a second too long. Her breath brushed my cheek. And it took everything in me not to lean in and connect my lips with hers.
Then she pushed up onto her elbows. “Get off me.”
I let her go, standing quickly, grabbing the blade.
But Tatiana was gone. The mist… lighter.
“She’s testing you,” I said. “Pushing. Waiting.”
“She’s losing,” Delilah muttered.
“I’m not sure she knows that yet.”
Delilah looked at me then. Really looked. And her eyes weren’t just sharp anymore. They were full of something else.
