Sienna:
The silence in the woods was not the type to bring peace. It was the kind that hummed with warning, like something beneath the surface was waiting to breathe. Like it was waiting to attack. Like it was waiting for the right moment to clamper upon those who are weak.
“I don’t like this,” I muttered. Damon did not want me being here, I knew that for a fact, but he also knew that stopping me was not going to be an option. I was not going to allow it and right now there was a lot going on and knowing that she was still lurking around… I knew that we needed to be careful.
“Neither do I,” he said. “But the mist didn’t take form. Not this time. At least not in front of us. Maybe she is here somehow, but she’s making sure to keep herself hidden.”
Not yet.
The sound of snapping twigs pulled both our heads toward the path.
Two figures emerged.
Delilah and Ethan, breathless, covered in leaves and streaks of dirt, but very much alive. Delilah’s hand was still close to Ethan’s, like neither of them had quite let go. How to accept the two of them for a moment too long before choosing to change the subject is not to ask a question that I knew that Delilah would not want to answer. The two of them were barely getting closer. I did not want to ruin that for them.
“Tell me you weren’t just out there alone,” I said before they even reached us. “We’ve been called by the maids. They say that there’s something that’s going on.”
“We weren’t alone,” Delilah said, voice tight. “She came to us. Yes, there is something going on and trust me, you’re not going to like it with her presence here, the way that she’s walking around, the way that she’s looking at us, she is threatening.”
I blinked. “Tatiana?”
Ethan nodded grimly. “She’s testing her. Watching her. The mist pulled back, but not before we saw her again. She spoke to us, she was more than willing to address Delilah, but trust me, she’s not happy, not with you, not with anyone that’s around.”
