Alpha Damon (Sienna) novel Chapter 62

Damon:

For a few moments I debated on whether or not to go and speak to Sienna.

I debated on whether to assure her that things were going to be alright as well, but she did not have to worry, that she did not have to put my mother’s words in her mind.

But after she decided to go to her room, she agreed to go and take care of our daughter. I was thankful that I did not need to do so. The last thing that I would have wanted was to have such a conversation, especially when I knew that my mother needed me most when my father was fighting for his life.

My chest ached and the sight of him being shot by the bullet played in my head on repeat.

Giovanni was playing a dangerous game and I knew that now this was one that he was not going to be able to get out of easily. Lysandra was going to pay, just like her father. If she had any role in this, which I assumed that she did, she was just going to pay for it.

The infirmary was quieter than I expected.

Too quiet.

The sterile scent of antiseptic filled the halls, the only sound breaking the silence being the soft beep of machines inside my father’s room. But it wasn’t the silence that unsettled me. It was the weight in the air. The tension that clung to everything like a thick fog.

I rounded the corner and stopped when I saw her.

My mother.

She was sitting in one of the chairs just outside my father’s room, her back straight, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She didn’t move when I approached, didn’t even acknowledge my presence.

She did not even react, it was as if her body was still there, was as if she was just lost in whatever trance she was in.

Her face was blank, but I knew better.

She was unraveling beneath the surface.

Ethan stood a few feet away, arms crossed as he leaned against the wall. His gaze met mine, and without saying a word, I understood.

They had to sedate her.

She wouldn’t have calmed down if they didn’t. Her anger, her pain and her rage, the fear of losing her mate, everything would be playing in her mind and I knew that she was not going to be able to rest unless they worked to help her.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair before stepping closer.

“She’s calmer now,” Ethan murmured, just loud enough for me to hear. “The nurses gave her something to help. I tried everything to calm her down. I tried everything not to allow her inside the surgery room. She was not listening. She wanted nothing more than to be by his side, no matter how hard they tried, no matter how hard I tried to speak to her.”

“He is her mate, her lover and her husband.” I muttered under my breath, knowing that this was something that I should have expected. Knowing that this was something that everyone should expect. “I want the men to trace down Giovanni and Lysandra. I want to know where she went and I want to know what she is doing. What he is doing, he is going to be in hiding, but Lysandra is not going to be stupid enough to actually listen to her father. I’m hoping at least. But I’m going to use her against him.”

“You don’t use women against…”

“They shot the first bullet. It’s just time for me to be the one to react. And trust me when I say I am being the most rational that I can be right now.” I said, glaring at Ethan as I stopped him. He nodded and took a step back, and I watched as he left. I looked as my mother for a moment too long before walking towards her, lowering myself into the chair beside her.

“If something happens to him,” she said, her voice trembling with restrained fury, “if Kael dies… I will make everyone pay. Everyone who is at fault, I’m going to make them pay.”

The raw hatred in her voice was chilling.

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t look away.

Because I felt it too.

I let out a slow, steady breath and met her gaze head-on.

“You won’t be the only one,” I said simply.

She studied me for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, ever so slightly, she nodded.

A silent agreement.

A promise.

One that neither of us would break.
