Damon:
I didn’t stop until I reached my room. The door slammed behind me, the sound ringing through the walls like a warning to anyone stupid enough to follow.
But for once, I didn’t want to be alone.
For the first time in my life, I’ve found myself seeking a little comfort, seeking gentle words that would ground me, that would tell me that things were just going to pass, that they were not going to proceed the way that they were.
I ran a hand down my face, the ghost of Giovanni’s smug voice still scraping at my nerves like a dull blade. I wanted to punch him in the face, I wanted to show him his place. And yet my father had stopped me.
He had walked into my house.
Looked me in the eye.
And spoke about her like she was nothing.
The man spoke about her as if she was some kind of burden that I needed to get rid of, like she had done something that needed to be punished.
And I almost lost it.
I would have lost it… if it weren’t for her. If it was not for my father reminding me of her.
Sienna.
The fucking Omega I couldn’t stop circling like a damn moth to flame. The girl I was supposed to forget. The woman I couldn’t stop wanting. The mother of my child. The woman who I wanted to get rid of. The woman who I knew I wanted nothing to do with and yet couldn’t help but find myself wanting to be close to.
And tonight… she did something none of us expected.
She stopped my mother.
No one stops Evelyn Lockwood.
No one stood in her face and told her not to do something that she was determined to do.
But she did.
Calmly. Boldly. With a strength I didn’t even know she still had in her after everything that had happened. A sacrifice that she made, that I did not expect her to make after everything that we put her through, after all the pain that she went through.
A quiet knock pulled me from my spiraling thoughts.
I didn’t need to ask who it was.
Her scent filled mine nostrils. Hell, I could feel her through the damn door.
“Sienna,” I said without thinking.
The door creaked open, and she stepped inside, her hands folded in front of her. No makeup, she rarely ever puts it anyway, at least not in the house.. No armor. Just her. Still in the simple clothes she’d worn earlier. Her hair loose around her shoulders. Her eyes… searching.
I watched her like a hawk as she stepped closer, stopping near the end of the room.
“I came to check on you,” she said softly. “I know that you slammed the door, and I know that you did not want anyone to be around you, but I figured that someone at least speaking to you might help. That is why I came to check if you’re okay if you needed anything.”
I didn’t speak right away. I just… stared.
She looked so small in this room, and yet so powerful after what she did tonight.
And I was completely at a loss for words. Not only did she stop my mother, but she came to comfort me without asking for anything in return, she came to check on me.
I swallowed the knot in my throat. “Thank you.”
She blinked. “For what?”
“For stopping my mother.” My voice was lower than usual. Less Alpha. More man. “You didn’t have to. But you did. You could have let things escalate, but you didn’t.”
But instead, I did what I never do.
I softened.
“I need to go check on Isla,” she said finally, pulling her eyes away.
I nodded once. “She’s in good hands.”
“Still.” She turned, pausing by the door. “Damon?”
I lifted my chin.
“I meant what I said to your mother. I’m not running anymore.”
Then she left.
And I just stood there.
Heart pounding.
Hands clenched.
Because this woman, the one I swore to keep out,
was inside me in more ways than I could admit.
And I wasn’t sure how long I could keep pretending otherwise.
