Sienna:
The sharp sound of raised voices echoed through the hall, making me frown in confusion.
I paused at the top of the stairs, Isla’s blanket clutched in my arms. I had come up to fetch her pacifier… but I froze. The last person that I expected to see her stood confidently, knowing that he did not belong in this place and yet here he was, standing outside in the garden.
Giovanni.
His voice was unmistakable, cold, arrogant, and dangerous.
The man’s presence here was unwanted and I knew that with it being here, he was coming with trouble for trouble, and that was not something that we were going to be able to get out of. I should have expected that he would start something, that he would stir something, but I did not expect him to have the confidence or the arrogance to come here. Not after the game that he played.
I took a cautious step closer to the banister, heart racing in my chest. I wanted to hear what they were talking about. Being outside, I knew that I couldn’t. Not every word at least. Most of the roles in the house were soundproof and considering the fact that most of the PAC members were talking, that muffled up a lot of what was being said, but I heard enough.
“…Omega wouldn’t still be breathing under your roof.”
My stomach twisted.
That bastard.
The fucking man was playing a game and I knew that he was going to try and portray me as nothing but an Omega. Maybe I was, but that did not deny the fact that I was Isla’s mother.
I knew I didn’t have allies here, real ones, but I hadn’t thought he would dare come into the Lockwood house and threaten me outright. I did not think that he would put me in a situation where everyone would be looking at me as a threat to them. My presence here being a threat.
My breath caught as I heard something crash. Then silence. Then Kael’s low voice pulling Damon back.
“Not yet.”
I didn’t move. I waited in silence as I watched. Not until I heard footsteps storming up behind me.
Evelyn.
She was trembling, her fists clenched at her sides as she charged toward the front doors like a woman possessed. Now, this was not going to be good, not good at all. If she went out, then chaos was going to erupt.
“Evelyn…” I stepped in her path without thinking.
“Move, Sienna.” Her voice was sharp, steel under silk. “That man dared to come into my home and…”
“I know,” I interrupted gently, planting my feet firmly. “But you can’t go out there. Not right now. Things are going to escalate in a way that is worse than you’re going to want it to. You cannot allow that to happen.”
Her eyes snapped to mine. “Don’t tell me what I can or can’t do. You don’t have the right. Do not forget your place. If I’m allowing you a sense of freedom, it does not mean that you get to tell me what to do and what not to do.”
“No, I do not have the right to do so. And I don’t intend to try and improve woke you or try to prove a place that I do not have or belong in.” I agreed, my voice low, even. “But I do have the understanding to know what’s going to happen if you walk through those doors right now. And I do know that you’re not going to want it to happen.”
Her nostrils flared. “You think I care? He threatened my mate. He…”
He was pissed.
But alive.
So was Kael.
I exhaled slowly.
Evelyn’s hand came to rest lightly on my shoulder as we watched Damon pass through the hallway, his chest rising with each breath. His gaze met mine, briefly, surprised, but unreadable.
He kept walking.
I didn’t move.
I had stood my ground tonight.
And for the first time…
I felt like I truly belonged in this house.
