Charlotte Goodman- Stark’s POV
It was late, and I was supposed to be asleep, but the bullies’ taunts were whirling around my head. It’s not the first time it’s kept me awake, but the bullying is getting worse, and soon I am worried it will become violent.
I sneaked out of bed to get a glass of water, which was when I realized my mom and dad were still awake. They were in his study with the door slightly open. They were talking about a pack in which a wolfless boy had been killed during basic training. It made me sick to think about it. That poor boy – I hope my dad gets justice for him.
It was now 7 am, and I was exhausted. “What’s up, princess?” My dad asked me as I started to fall asleep at the table. He was wearing a shirt and tie, but his robes were hanging over the back of a chair. That meant he would be going away for a few days, leaving us with her.
It’s not that I didn’t love my mom. It was just that when I started middle school, she didn’t have any time for me anymore, and that hurt.
I wondered whether she would be going with Dad? She sometimes does that when we go and stay at the palace with Uncle Caspian and Aunt Sam. At least I get to see my cousins. I have loads of fun there and get spoiled rotten.
I used to think my mom was the most brilliant person in the world. But now I can barely look at her. I don’t know why Dad took her as his mate. It’s not like she is anyone special. All she does is stay at home all day and clean the house. “Are you okay, Charlotte?” My dad asked again.
“Yeah, sure, I just didn’t sleep very well.” He didn’t push the matter, and no one seemed to notice the bags under my eyes. I am eleven, for goodness’ sake. How have my parents not noticed?
The only people who seem to care are my older friends.
Elis and Jessica. They know what’s going on with me, and they stick up for me frequently, but that has made them targets. hate my life so much right now that I actually contemplate running away sometimes. Life may be simpler away from everything and everyone.
Mom walked into the kitchen carrying my two younger siblings. “Your children have been so cheeky,” Mom tells Dad, causing Florence and Dexter to run off laughing.
“I think you were supposed to say, OUR children,” Dad said before he walked over to my Mom and kissed her. I don’t know what he sees in her. He works for the wolf council; he is someone important, while she is just a stay-at-home mom. She giggled and went to kiss him again. “Get a room,” I yelled as I snatched my food off my plate and walked toward the door.
I must have been out of the house early because Great-Grandma hadn’t arrived yet. She always takes me to school and picks me up. She says it’s because she wants to, but really, I think it’s because my mom can’t be bothered. Honestly, if she can’t be bothered with her kids, why did she have them?
“What’s up, sweetness?” Great-grandma asked.
“Nothing,” I responded. She wouldn’t understand even if l told her.
“IIl give you a cookie if you tell me what is on your mind right now,” Great-grandma offered. She makes the best cookies.
“Elis and Jessica started dating, and I feel a bit like a third wheel.” I lied, wanting to divert the topic away from myself.
Great grandma snickered. “Elis is such a kind and gentle boy. He sees the best in everything and everyone, just like his parents. He needs a mate who will look after him.
Jessica is perfect for him.”
“I’m more worried that if they break up, I will have to choose between my two best friends,” I told her, elaborating on my lie. I’m not worried; they do complement each other. It will be awkward if they’re not mates, though.
“I know better than anyone that the goddess works in mysterious ways. If she wants them to be together, she will find a way. Look at your Mom and Dad. Have they ever told you when they met?”
“No. She hasn’t told me anything about her past. She tells me nothing.” No doubt my parents had a nightstand, andshe got pregnant. That will be how she trapped Dad.
As we got to Wilcox Middle School. My great-grandmother encouraged me to speak to my mom about her past, so that it would help me understand her life better. I never asked, as l always thought if there was something my mom wanted me to know. She would have told me. Elis and Jessica were waiting for me. My mood instantly lifted upon seeing them. “Cookies for my favorite people!” I yelled, pulling off the lid to share them with my best friends.
“These are the best. Far better than the crap my mom makes,” Jessica said, referring to Aunt Sasha’s baking skills. But let’s face it, Aunt Sasha is in the Royal Guard, so why does she need to bake?
When the bell rang, we all went our separate ways. My first period was math, and I was sure I fell asleep at some point. But I made it to the end of class without being caught. Thankfully, the bell went, and I rushed out of the classroom. visit j_o{b}n_i(b) .- c{o)m for more interesting books. As I stood by my locker, Elis approached me. “Are you okay with me and Jessica?” I smiled at him. “The pair of you are my friends. As long as you’re happy, l am happy,” I told him, whereupon he hugged me. “Hey, Jessica may get the wrong impression. Get off me. I don’t want to face her wrath,” I protested. Elis snickered at me.
“She would never get the wrong impression of you. We are best friends forever,” he confessed.
“Oh, look at the losers hugging. We should take a picture and frame it for them.” Esme and her friends mocked us. I hated her with every ounce of my being. She has been my main bully since l arrived here. “I suppose you are a perfect match for each other. Him being the child of rogues, and you being pathetic. I guess you would fit in with his pack, Charlotte. Seeing that no one else would want you.”
“Elis is an Alpha’s son; how dare you call him a rogue?” I defended Elis.
“His dad was given that land out of sympathy. No one respects him. No one.” Esme walked over and pushed me against my locker, and she kicked my feet from under me, so I fell to the ground. “My family has been in charge of the Direwood pack for decades. That makes us practically royalty. We can do whatever we want, to whomever we want, and other than the Alpha King and Luna Queen, my family is untouchable,” Esme announced proudly. Her surrounding friends cheered her.
I got to my feet and was about to tell her who I was related to when Jessica appeared. “What’s going on here?” she yelled.
“I was just educating your friends as to their position in life,” Esme smirked. “It’s the same as yours, beneath me and everyone else in this school. You are all trash, and even then. I think that’s too good a term for you all.” Shethrew her head back, laughing.
Jessica looked at me in disgust, then she cracked her knuckles and turned to Esme. Oh shit, I know what is about to happen. Jessica has been training with her mom since she could walk. She has just never acted on it. But when she cracked her knuckles, I knew what was coming.
Before I knew it, I was involved in a brawl in the middle of the school corridor.
I was taking punch after punch. But I was also giving a few. Eventually, Principal Reynold and the teachers arrived, pulling us all apart. Esme’s face was a mess.
Jessica had gone to town on her. Dramatically, Esme dropped to her knees, crying, telling Principal Reynolds we had started the fight because we were jealous of her.
Her friends backed up her story.
“As if we would be jealous of you. You skank. As for you Lot, I will kick your asses right now,” Jessica yelled, lunging forward.
“I’m scared, Principal Reynolds, I want my daddy,” Esme cried.
“I’m calling your parents,” Principal Reynolds informed us all. “Until they arrive, I suggest you think about what you have all done. I cannot tell you all how disappointed l am in you.” With Jessica still threatening Esme, the three of us were placed in isolation together. While Esme was isolated with her bully friends. I hope he calls my Dad and not my mom. He’s the one with the power in our family. She’s useless.
While we waited for our parents to show up, we got cleaned up. Elis had a few cuts and bruises. But Jessica was a mess; she had a black eye and a busted lip. “Your mom is going to go spare when she sees the state of you,” I said, snickering.
Jessica smiled, causing her lip to split. “My friends are worth a few injuries.” Elis rushed over to her, placing a piece of tissue paper on her lip to stop the bleeding. The way he did it was so gentle and sweet. “No smiling until it’s healed,” he told her. She pursed her lips together, trying not to smile. But eventually she gave up, and her lip burst again.
We talked about what had happened. “It’s been coming for a while,” Jessica reminded me. It was on my first day, Esme called me names and took my lunch. If she were so hungry, I would have shared. Things escalated from there.
“Look,” Elis said, as we rushed to the window to see multiple cars arriving. But it was no one I knew.
Ten minutes passed, and then Principal Reynolds walked in, with Esme and her group of friends behind her. A group of tall men in dark suits followed. They all stared at us in disgust. “Charlotte, Elis, Jessica. This is Alpha James of the Direwood Pack. He is Esme’s father.”
“So.” Jessica snapped.
