Ella sat on the edge of her bed, staring into the mug of coffee she wrapped in her hands. The room was quiet, save for the soft buzz of the heater and the faint rustling of the curtains swaying with the breeze from her slightly opened window. Her sleepless nights were taking their toll. Dark circles shadowed her tired eyes.
She sighed deeply, her thoughts muddled with the weight of everything Valen and Derek had said to her. It felt like a heavy storm brewing within, and no matter how hard she tried to steady herself, she couldn’t escape the uncertainties before her.
“Now you know the truth, so what next?” Lila’s voice broke through her thoughts, gentle but firm.
Ella sighed heavily and took a sip of her now lukewarm coffee. “I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice low and weary. The night had been long, she hadn’t had a good night’s sleep. The nightmares aren’t helping matters either, it’s becoming more frequent lately. She had mostly stayed up all through the night.
“You can’t keep saying that, Ella,” Lila retorted, her tone sharp. “Look at yourself! You’re not just losing sleep; you’re losing yourself. You’re becoming a shadow of who you used to be.”
A flicker of irritation sparked within Ella. She set the mug down with more force than intended. “All thanks to who?” she snapped, her frustration bubbling over.
“Blame whoever you want,” Lila replied calmly, refusing to be provoked. “But that won’t change the fact that this is your fight. The moon goddess didn’t choose you by mistake. Now, don’t make it sound like the Moon Goddess made a mistake choosing you for this. She definitely chose you for a reason”
The mention of the moon goddess pulled at Ella’s heart. The weight of destiny had always been heavy, but now it felt suffocating. “I didn’t ask for this,” she muttered, her fingers tightening around the mug.
“Yes you didn’t, but you were the one chosen. You can’t escape it. The moon goddess can’t give you a burden that’s too hard for you to bear; at least not without providing all necessary support you would be needing.” Lila responded calmly.
Ella let out a shaky breath, guilt washing over her. “I’m sorry,” she murmured, her voice softening. “I didn’t mean for it to come out that way.”
Lila’s voice softened, but her words carried urgency. “You need your mates, Ella. Not just one-both of them. You know you can’t face what’s coming alone.Together, they can anchor you. Together, you’re much stronger.”
Ella stared out the window, her eyes unfocused. The weight of Lila’s words pressed heavily on her chest. She knew her wolf was right, but the tangled web of emotions she felt toward her mates left her paralyzed. Trust didn’t come easily-not after everything she had been through.
“You’ve seen the beast in your dreams,” Lila continued, her voice growing more urgent. “This isn’t just about you, Ella. The war that’s coming isn’t ordinary. You need to heal, forgive, and move forward. There’s no more time to waste!”
Before Ella could form a response, her phone buzzed on the table, breaking the tense silence. She reached for it, squinting at the screen. The number was unfamiliar. She hesitated but answered.
“Hello?” she said cautiously.
For a moment, there was only silence on the other end. Then, a voice she hadn’t heard in years spoke.
“Hi, Ella. Long time.”
Ella froze. Her grip on the phone tightened as her heart skipped a beat. That voice… She knew it well. Even after five years, it was impossible to forget.
“Sandra,” Ella said, her tone cold and guarded. The name tasted bitter on her tongue.
Sandra’s voice dripped with smugness. “Oh, good. You still recognize my voice. Saves me the trouble of introducing myself.”
Ella’s jaw clenched as memories of Sandra’s betrayal flooded her mind-the betrayal, the humiliation at the engagement, the sting of her stepsister’s cruel words.
“What do you want, Sandra?” Ella asked, her tone sharp and impatient.
Sandra’s tone turned sweet, fake concern lacing her words. “Can’t I check on my dear sister? Family bonds are so important, don’t you think?”
“Family?” Ella repeated bitterly, the word tasting like ash on her tongue. “We have no business with each other anymore, Sandra. I’ve already cut ties with your pack.”
Her breathing quickened as anger and desperation surged through her. If Sandra had anything to do with the loss of her pup- anything at all—there would be no forgiveness. No mercy.
Ella slammed the phone onto the table and stood abruptly. Her fists clenched at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. Her jaw tightened, and her chest rose and fell with the force of her emotions.
She turned to the mirror across the room, her reflection staring back at her. Her once-bright eyes now held a storm, a fire she hadn’t seen in herself for a long time. She had been broken, humiliated, betrayed-but this was different.
This was rage.
“If Sandra had anything to do with what happened to my pup,” Ella muttered under her breath, her voice low and venomous,” I swear I’ll kill her.”
Her wolf stirred restlessly within her, the bond between them tense.
“Ella,” Lila said softly, her tone filled with concern. “You need to be careful. Sandra is dangerous, and she knows how to manipulate you. Whatever she’s planning, you need to be ready for it. She’s not to be trusted.”
“I know” Ella responded, her voice filled with rage.
Lila stirred, echoing her rage. “If Sandra hurt our pup, she will pay,” Lila growled.
Ella nodded, her resolve hardening. She didn’t know what awaited her at that address, but one thing was clear-if Sandra had played any part in her suffering, she would wish she hadn’t called.
