**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 10**
Dylan made his way toward me, a dark umbrella held firmly in his hand, the fabric stretching taut against the relentless rain.
My heart raced in my chest. Was he truly here for me at this hour?
Did he somehow know I was left unprotected from the downpour? Was it possible that he was actually—
“Dylan…” I began, a thread of hope weaving its way into my voice. “What are you still doing here?”
He frowned, irritation evident in his expression. “Have you seen Madison? Is she still inside?”
Oh.
The realization hit me like a cold wave. He was searching for Madison. My heart plummeted, sinking deep into the pit of my stomach.
“No.” The word slipped from my lips, barely a whisper, as if I feared saying it too loudly would somehow change the truth.
“That’s odd. She said she’d be at the library,” he muttered, pulling out his phone. His fingers danced across the screen, a flurry of urgency as he attempted to reach her.
Just then, from a different entrance, Madison emerged, her white dress clinging to her as it soaked up the rain.
“Dylan!” she called out, her face lighting up with an exuberant smile. “You came to pick me up!”
“We agreed on it, didn’t we?” Dylan replied, instinctively shifting the umbrella to shield her from the rain, as if it were second nature to him. Like he had done it countless times before.
It was only then that Madison’s gaze fell upon me, her surprise almost theatrical, as if she had just discovered my presence.
“Oh! Ivy’s here too. You don’t have an umbrella?”
Her tone was laced with feigned astonishment mixed with an unmistakable satisfaction.
I shook my head, unable to trust my voice to form any words.
