**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
I had heard whispers, fleeting echoes that danced around me like shadows.
Heard? From her? And if he was with her, then why was I still here?
Ah, yes. He was preoccupied with Madison.
I found myself fixated on those words for what felt like an eternity.
What was I meant to say in response?
That I had nearly lost my life? That I had spent days in the hospital? That I desperately needed him?
But what was the point? He wouldn’t care, not really. To him, I was merely a parasite, a burden.
And parasites getting sick? Well, that was just the way of the world, wasn’t it?
The following day, I forced myself to attend class, feeling as if I had been dragged through the mud and left to dry in the sun.
It wasn’t out of a love for education; rather, it was the fear of this teacher’s strict attendance policy. Miss even a single class, and your grade would plummet into the abyss.
As I stepped into the classroom, a palpable shift occurred.
Conversations halted abruptly, and a heavy silence filled the air as every pair of eyes turned toward me.
Then, the whispers began, a low murmur that spread like wildfire.
“The leech is here.”
“I heard she pretended to be sick just to grab Dylan’s attention last night.”
“And he completely ignored her. How hilarious.”
“So pathetic. Even after all this, she still won’t give up.”
With my face a mask of indifference, I made my way to my desk. Awaiting me was yet another note, a cruel reminder of my status.
[Kill yourself, parasite!]
I tossed it into the trash without a second thought and retrieved my textbook from my bag.
Madison, perched at the front of the room, turned around, her expression feigning concern. “Ivy, you look terrible. Are you feeling okay?”
Her voice was just loud enough for the entire class to hear, a calculated move that sent a ripple of anticipation through the air.
