**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
“Please forgive me, Nova. I truly didn’t mean to intrude on your moment with Damien. I can see that you’ve been feeling down all day, and Damien is practically losing his mind with worry about you.”
I attempted to shake her off, but Madison’s grasp was unexpectedly firm, and it stung more than I anticipated.
When I finally managed to yank my hand away, Madison staggered back, her eyes brimming with tears that seemed ready to spill over any second.
“Damien! I think Nova is still upset about me crashing your friend gatherings. I swear I’ll apologize properly—maybe we can sort this out, the three of us?”
She was genuinely about to bow her head in contrition when Damien intervened, clearly losing his composure.
“What the hell, Nova?”
“Why are you being so physical with her? You owe Madison an apology,” he snapped, his voice edged with anger.
“And just so you know, we’re all going to the same college, so we really should start looking out for one another,” he added, his tone softening slightly but still firm.
“Well, since you two are so fixated on looking after each other, perhaps you should just stick to that and leave me out of it,” I retorted, tossing the words over my shoulder as I turned to walk away.
Behind me, I could hear Damien’s voice sharpen: “Nova, you’re completely out of line.”
A few moments later, Damien and Madison returned to the group, their energy palpable. Damien looked as tense as a coiled spring, while Madison radiated a glow, her cheeks flushed and laughter bubbling up like a fountain.
The others began to tease them about their earlier disappearance, and during a game of Truth or Dare, they started concocting increasingly intimate dares for the two of them.
Even Damien’s oldest friends were playing the role of wingman, completely oblivious to my presence as I watched this entire spectacle unfold.
But honestly, what did it matter? In their eyes, I was just the pathetic sidekick, a shadow lurking in the background.
As the game progressed, Madison was dared to give someone a lap dance. Without hesitation, she locked eyes with Damien, as if he were her only choice in the world.
Damien shot a glance in my direction, probably expecting me to erupt in jealousy as I usually did.
But this time, I remained still, my heart a heavy weight in my chest.
Madison had been part of the dance team at school, and with her stunning figure, she certainly knew how to move.
I downed a beer, my eyes fixed on Madison as she swayed around Damien to the beat of some catchy K-pop track.
At first, Damien kept casting furtive glances in my direction, as if waiting for me to intervene and put an end to the unfolding scene.
