**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time**
**by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 26**
Damien’s voice echoed through the room, sharp and unyielding: “This is your last warning. Nova.”
I could feel the tension crackling in the air, a palpable thing that made my skin prickle. “I’ve been trying to make peace all morning,” I shot back, my voice steady despite the storm brewing inside me. “Don’t push me. I already bought your plane ticket. We’re meeting at the airport tomorrow morning.”
His eyes flashed with defiance, and he shrugged off my words as if they were nothing. “Come or don’t come—I’m done begging,” he retorted, his tone dripping with a mix of frustration and finality.
With a forceful motion, he slammed my phone down onto the table, the sound reverberating in the quiet room like a gunshot. Then, without another word, he stormed toward the door, leaving a trail of anger in his wake.
I couldn’t let him go just yet. I followed him, my heart racing, ready to lock up the moment he stepped outside.
He caught sight of my determination, and the fury in his gaze intensified. Damien was absolutely seething, his frustration radiating off him in waves.
Just before I could close the door, his face darkened, shadowed by the weight of his words. He managed to squeeze in one last barb: “With that attitude, I don’t know how you’re gonna survive making friends in your dorm after we arrive in California. Good luck with that.”
I slammed the door, cutting off his parting shot, the sound echoing in my ears like a final verdict.
Once back in the living room, the anger bubbled over. I grabbed Damien’s expensive pastries—his so-called peace offerings—and hurled them into the trash with a mix of disdain and relief.
Who needed his guilt gifts anyway? They were nothing but a reminder of the mess we were tangled in.
And honestly, who wanted to be the third wheel on his romantic escapade with Madison? The thought made my stomach churn.
