**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
The celebration unfolded in the grand ballroom, an intimate gathering of family and a few friends from high school. Yet, despite the familiar faces, the vastness of the space felt suffocating, as if the walls themselves were closing in on me.
As I stepped into the room, a hush fell over the crowd. Their eyes widened in disbelief, as if they had just encountered a specter from their past. I could almost hear the whispers echoing in their minds: “What’s she doing here after everything that happened?”
I forced a polite smile, engaging in trivial conversations, pretending to be oblivious to the tension in the air. But their not-so-subtle glances were impossible to ignore, the hushed murmurs that ceased the moment I passed by. Four years spent in high school had given me a PhD in the art of reading gossip, and I was acutely aware of the undercurrents swirling around me.
Desperate for a breath of fresh air, I slipped out onto the terrace, seeking solace from the stifling atmosphere inside. It was there, just around the corner, that I overheard a conversation I wished I could unhear. Aiden’s friends had cornered him by the service entrance, their voices low but unmistakable.
“Seriously? I thought she was done with you after the whole Madison thing at the party. Now she’s crawling back?”
Aiden’s laughter rang out, sharp and cold, a sound that sent a shiver down my spine. It was a tone I had never associated with him before.
“Please. She’s just being dramatic. Give her a few days. You really think she’d walk away after all these years? She doesn’t know how to exist without me,” he replied, his arrogance palpable.
