**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
He practically propelled me into the hotel’s private lounge, the door clicking shut behind us with a finality that echoed in the stillness of the room.
Alden stood there, a towering figure blocking the exit, his six-foot frame casting a shadow over me. Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit that did little to disguise the tension coiling in his shoulders, he seemed like a statue of anger and disbelief. His voice trembled with a mix of frustration and incredulity as he confronted me.
“Real mature, Brooklyn! You’re just going to throw away everything we’ve planned, just to spite me? Running off to Stanford? We had our whole future mapped out!”
I lifted my chin, finally mustering the courage I had painstakingly built over the summer. My voice emerged steadier than I felt, as if each word had been rehearsed a thousand times in my mind.
“I’m allowed to have my own dreams, you know. Why does my entire existence have to revolve around your plans? God, Aiden, do you even hear yourself?”
The weight of my words hung in the air, and I took a deep breath, preparing to unleash the truth I had been holding back for far too long. “And let’s be honest, are you really angry about broken promises, or is it that you’re losing your convenient backup girl?”
