**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**

**Chapter 72**

The following morning, Avery was jolted awake by the incessant buzzing of her phone. It vibrated violently against her nightstand, a relentless reminder of the storm brewing in her messages.

Ethan had bombarded her with an avalanche of texts—fifty, to be exact—each one pleading for her presence.

Her heart plummeted into her stomach. Seriously, Ethan? Could you possibly be any more of an asshole?

With trembling fingers, she typed a terse response: “Feel like shit. Not coming.”

Barely had she hit send when a series of loud knocks reverberated through her bedroom door, each one more urgent than the last.

“Avery!” her mother called, her voice laced with concern. “Even if you’re upset with Ethan, this is NOT the time to sulk! Get up and get dressed. You have no idea how much this date means to him. He’s been infatuated with Sophia for years. The moment he found out she was back in New York, he practically begged your dad to help arrange this whole thing.”

Her father chimed in, his tone firm yet gentle. “Exactly. Sophia used to take piano lessons from you, and I had a hand in making this happen. The gifts, the dinner—everything is meticulously planned. He wants you there to keep things from getting awkward. Having another girl around will help Sophia feel at ease. Ethan is serious about her this time, and you two are best friends. How can you let him down now?”

The realization that Ethan had actually reached out to her parents when she turned him down was infuriating. Un-fucking-believable.

As she listened to them plead her case, the weight of their words pressed down on her, and she fought back tears while hastily getting ready.

Their houses were practically neighbors, and within ten minutes, she found herself standing at the Millers’ front door, heart racing. She opened the shoe cabinet, only to be met with an unsettling sight—completely empty. Her beloved bunny slippers were nowhere in sight.

Frantically searching, she finally spotted them—along with her mug, toothbrush, towel, pajamas—everything that was once hers—discarded carelessly in the trash can outside.

“Miss Avery, Mr. Miller threw those out earlier. Here, just use these shoe covers,” a voice said, pulling her from her stupor.

Staring at the trash can, a profound silence enveloped her.

Their families had shared a bond for generations, and she had spent countless days and nights at the Millers’ home, feeling like part of their family.

Ethan had even given her a whole bedroom, filling it with adorable decor featuring her favorite bunny pattern.

He had always insisted, “Make yourself at home.”

They had stolen kisses by the front door, shared secret hand-holding under the dinner table, and cuddled in the study, all while their parents remained blissfully unaware.

But now, with Sophia back in the picture, Ethan seemed petrified that his crush might misinterpret their bond.

In a desperate attempt to erase every trace of her existence, he had thrown away her belongings.

Taking a deep breath, Avery finally managed to compose herself before slipping on the shoe covers, feeling a mix of anger and sadness wash over her.

As she stepped into the living room, the scene before her was almost surreal. Ethan was perched on the couch, peeling fruit for Sophia, both of them laughing as if they were in their own little world.

He looked so polished in a custom-tailored suit, his hair styled to perfection, and the scent of cologne wafting through the air, radiating that unmistakable rich playboy aura.

Back in school, Avery had often heard girls whisper that he was so attractive he could make a trash bag look high fashion, and on days like this, when he dressed up, he could easily overshadow movie stars.

But usually, Ethan was the epitome of laid-back, donning hoodies and jeans, showing little regard for fashion or appearance.

So, he cleaned up for someone he genuinely cared about, huh?
