**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time**
**by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 78**
The moment the doctor assured her that there were no broken bones, merely flesh wounds, a wave of relief washed over Avery. She let out a long, shaky breath, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly.
After the bandaging was done, she made her way home, her mind racing with thoughts of the approaching departure. The living room was cluttered with suitcases of every shape and size, a chaotic reminder of the new life waiting for her in Spain.
For the next two days, she allowed herself to rest, cocooned in the comfort of her familiar surroundings. But the weight of her upcoming move pressed heavily on her, and she knew it was time to share the news with her closest friends. Gathering them together, she revealed her plans for immigration.
Their reactions were immediate and heartfelt. They quickly rallied to organize a farewell party in her honor, a bittersweet celebration of her new adventure. As the evening unfolded, the atmosphere was thick with emotion. Laughter and tears intermingled as her friends made her promise to keep in touch, to not let distance sever the bonds they had forged over the years.
As the party wore on and the first light of dawn began to creep through the windows, the gathering finally began to break up. Avery, feeling a mix of gratitude and sadness, saw each friend off with warm hugs and promises of future visits. After settling the bill, she turned to retrieve her purse, her heart still heavy with the weight of goodbyes.
As she made her way toward the exit, she passed by a partially open door and caught snippets of familiar voices drifting out. Curiosity piqued, she paused to listen.
“So Ethan, how does it feel to finally get your dream girl?” One voice teased, and Avery’s heart sank at the mention of his name.
Ethan’s smug reply followed, dripping with confidence. “Man, I’d die happy right now if she asked.”
The room erupted into laughter, the sound echoing in her ears like a cruel reminder of what she had lost.
“What about your childhood sex buddy?” someone chimed in, the question hanging in the air like a dark cloud.
After a moment of silence, Ethan’s casual response cut through her like a knife. “Her? Great in bed.”
The laughter intensified, and Avery felt her stomach churn.
“Damn! A hookup you can call up whenever and toss aside whenever, and you don’t even have to take responsibility? Man, your bros are gonna be so jealous!”
Amidst the raucous laughter, Ethan merely raised an eyebrow, his silence speaking volumes.
“But now that you’re engaged to Sophia, what are you gonna do about your little sidekick?”
Ethan’s confidence remained unshaken. “No big deal. I will dump her. I only have Sophia in my heart. I don’t want anyone else.”
His words dripped with certainty, and the others praised his apparent devotion. Yet, outside the door, Avery stood frozen, her nails digging into her palms until her knuckles turned white.
