**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time**
by Dael Rowan Sire

**Chapter 84**

The Collins family had just wrapped up their first month in Spain, a whirlwind of paperwork and moving boxes that had finally settled into the comforting chaos of their new home. After nearly two grueling months of navigating the labyrinthine immigration processes, each member of the family felt the weight of exhaustion pressing down on them like a thick blanket.

With the bureaucratic hurdles behind them, a sense of relief washed over the family, prompting them to plan a much-needed escape to the beach. The day dawned bright and clear, autumn’s crispness in the air, the kind of day that begged for relaxation and leisure.

Avery sunk into her beach chair, the sun warming her skin as she gazed out at the rhythmic dance of the waves. With each gentle swell and retreat, her mood began to lift, the salty breeze carrying away the remnants of stress.

Curiosity piqued, she picked up her phone, only to be bombarded by a torrent of messages that made her heart race.

“MAJOR GOSSIP! Avery, Ethan and Sophia’s wedding crashed and burned LMAOOO!”

“You missed it! Sophia’s face was twisted with rage and Ethan got slapped TWICE! Epic!”

“Told you rushed marriages never last! Hahaha they broke up ON their wedding day! I’m dying!”

Each notification echoed the same sensational story, a relentless reminder of a relationship that had once consumed her thoughts.

Avery felt a wave of indifference wash over her. What did it matter now?

Just then, her mother settled beside her, two glasses of juice in hand, a bright smile illuminating her face. “You’ve been parked here forever! Is this really your idea of a vacation?”

Avery took a long sip of her drink, the coolness refreshing against her lips. “Hell yeah. Just look at all the hot people walking by. This is my perfect day.”

Her mom chuckled, clearly understanding her daughter’s perspective, and after a few more moments of light-hearted conversation, she surrendered to the call of the ocean, leaving Avery to her sun-soaked reverie.

Avery adjusted her sun hat, preparing to slather on more sunscreen when her mom’s phone rang, the name “Mrs. Miller” flashing across the screen. A twinge of hesitation gripped her as she considered whether to answer.

“Avery? We’re in Madrid. Are you home?”

Madrid? What did that mean?
