**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 89**

The anticipation for forgiveness and the thrill Ethan had hoped to see in Avery’s eyes was conspicuously absent. Instead, her expression was a mask of cold indifference, leaving him feeling as though he had been struck by a sudden chill.

Those two simple words hung in the air like a heavy fog, freezing his expression in place.

Confusion washed over him. He had just bared his soul, laid his heart out before her like a fragile offering. Why was she unresponsive? Why did his vulnerability fail to reach her?

As he gazed through the window at her unyielding face, he felt an overwhelming tightness in his chest, as if the very air around him had thickened, making it difficult to breathe.

But he knew time was slipping away, the moments dwindling like sand through his fingers. He had to continue, to lay bare every ounce of his being, regardless of the risk.

“Avery, please,” he implored, his voice rising with desperation. “You’re the only one I want now.” His tone grew more urgent, each word tinged with an emotional plea. “Just give me one more chance! I swear I’ll never mess up again. I’ll tell everyone about us. I’ll treat you like I used to. If you want, we can get engaged right away! I’ll give you the future you dream of. I promise.”

Each statement was delivered with a conviction that resonated in the air between them, as if he were trying to weave a tapestry of hope from the threads of his words.

Avery, however, remained stoic. As she lowered her gaze, he noticed her eyes glistening with unshed tears, a flicker of something once precious now dimmed.

Two months ago, those very words would have ignited a fire within her, a yearning for the future they had envisioned together.

But life, as it often does, offered no second chances.

And deep down, she knew she didn’t want a future with him anymore.

“I don’t think I’m the one you love,” she said, her voice steady yet laced with sadness. “I don’t see a future for us. If that’s all you wanted to say, let me be clear: you and me? It’s never going to happen.”

With those words, the last flicker of hope within Ethan was extinguished, leaving behind a hollow ache.

His expression darkened, shadows creeping across his features. He felt a tremor run through his body, his fists clenched so tightly that the veins bulged like ropes beneath his skin.

His grief-stricken eyes locked onto hers, his voice trembling with emotion. “Why, Avery? I know I messed up! Why can’t you just forgive me?” His voice cracked, the weight of his sorrow palpable. “Don’t you remember saying you only wanted to be with me? Don’t you remember promising we’d never be apart?”

Of course, Avery recalled those moments—their laughter, their dreams, the promises they had shared.

In her heart, she had once cherished Ethan and their relationship as the most valuable treasure of her life.

But promises, she realized, have a shelf life, and hers had expired the moment her love for him faded.

Now, they were practically strangers, and the thought of revisiting old promises felt futile.
