Chapter 101
Chapter 101
The room went still.
Then a few people snorted, quickly covering it with roughs.
Wow.
They’d never known Dr. Elara had that in her.
Td always been so quiet. But today, I’d brought the fire.
Amelia’s face darkened. She took a sharp breath, forcing calm. “Do you really think you’ll be Mrs. Grayson forever?”
“It seems you’re eager to take the trash I’ve thrown out.” I said it evenly, then glanced at the fruit she’d brought and told the nurses, “Don’t waste food–that’s just manners. Enjoy it.”
Then I turned and walked away.
Back in my office, checking my phone, I saw a message from Vera from two hours earlier.
[Elara, do you have time for lunch?]
I checked the time.
It was already past one o’clock.
I replied honestly: I just finished work and saw your message.
I was still typing a second message, about to say it was too late and suggest meeting another time, when the other person replied instantly.
It’s okay, I happen to be near your clinic. Let’s have lunch together?
I could probably guess what she was thinking and felt it would be best to clear the air, so I grabbed my bag and headed to the restaurant we’d agreed
The place wasn’t too crowded at this hour, just a few customers scattered around.
It was quiet.
As soon as I walked in, I saw Vera waving at me from a booth by the window.
I went over, and she familiarly took my bag with a smile. “I didn’t realize being a doctor meant such irregular hours for meals.”
“It’s fine,” I said.
I’ve never been great with excessive enthusiasm from people I’m not close to.
Vera had been dealing with all sorts since she was a kid, and most people fell over themselves to be warm around her. Especially after she started seeing Gavin–there was never a shortage of people trying to win her favor.
Someone like me, who stayed consistently reserved, was pretty rare. Or honestly, maybe unheard of.
Still, I am Gavin’s sister.
Vera didn’t seem to mind and handed me the menu. “I wasn’t sure what you like, so I waited for you to order. See what looks good.”

Chapter 101
“Okay.”
I took the menu. This place was close to the clinic. I’d been here plenty of times. I picked a couple of dishes almost automatically and handed it back.
Vera glanced at my choices and laughed teasingly. “You and Gavin really are alike. Not just your personalities–you like almost all the same food.”
I took a sip of my lemon water. “When you live under the same roof, you pick up similar tastes, I guess.”
That wasn’t really it, though.
When I was ten, I’d started getting picky about food. Combined with my already fussy eating habits, I just got thinner and thinner.
Gavin couldn’t stand seeing me so skinny. From then on, he told the kitchen to make everything to my taste.
I’ve always had a sweet tooth. Love sour and spicy stuff too. I’ll eat anything except bitter things.
Gavin, who used to prefer milder flavors, slowly started eating what I liked over the years.
The food came quickly. Vera slid my favorite dishes toward me and asked, casual as anything, “Elara… has Gavin ever had a girlfriend before?”
I froze for a second, then shook my head. “I don’t know.”
Not before.
As for the last eight years… I didn’t know. Had no clue.
Nearly half my life had nothing to do with him. How would I know about his love life?
“Wow, I’m surprised even you don’t know,” Vera said, a little disappointed. But she perked up again quickly. “Do you know if there’s anyone he likes? He always keeps this photo in his wallet…
treasures it…”
For the first time, I noticed the lemon water here was too strong. The sip I’d swallowed earlier seemed to spread from my throat through my whole body, lingering, leaving even my heart feeling sour and tight.
“Vera,” I said, taking a slow breath to push down the discomfort. “Actually, Gavin and I haven’t been in touch for years. If it weren’t for the Windsor Group project, we probably wouldn’t be talking now, either.”
“Who he likes, whether he likes anyone… I really don’t know.”
“You’re Gavin’s girlfriend. If there’s something you want to know, you should ask him directly. There’s no need to go through me–his so–called sister.”
My tone remained perfectly even the entire time.
