Betrayed I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 137

This wasn’t a memory from eight years ago.

Back then, I was utterly addicted to the snooze button, and mornings were my sworn enemy. No alarm, no matter how shrill, could rouse me. It was always Gavin who had to drag me out of bed personally.

He’d haul me up, my eyes bleary and my mood sour, then shove a toothbrush loaded with toothpaste and a glass of water into my reluctant hands.

I’d be furious, yet beneath that irritation, a part of me still felt intimidated by him. So, begrudgingly, I’d brush my teeth with sharp, unhappy strokes.

Every time I did, Gavin would tease, “If you don’t want those teeth, I can have them all pulled. Saves you the trouble of brushing, and hey, you get an extra two minutes of sleep.”

So toxic, so typical.

I shook my head sharply, as if to physically shake off the memory, and reached for my phone lying on the bed. My gaze locked onto the screen, but my foggy brain struggled to process what I saw.

Call duration: 7 hours 12 minutes.

It took a few sluggish moments for the fog in my mind to clear. The promise I’d made just before passing out suddenly came rushing back.

Clearing my throat nervously, I stammered, “I—I was out cold. Just… give me a minute.” Before he could reply, I ended the call and hurried to the bathroom to freshen up and change into some clothes.

When I stepped back into the room, he was leaning casually against the wall, looking profoundly bored. As I appeared, he straightened slowly, his voice flat and unimpressed. “For a second there, I thought you were trying to welch on your debt. Too cheap to pay up.”

I shot him a look and slipped on my coat as I moved toward the door. “I can afford one suit.”

“Then let’s go.”

He pressed the elevator button. I finished buttoning my coat and stood beside him, our shoulders nearly touching.

From the outside, we looked like a couple heading out together.

The elevator doors slid open quickly. Inside, a young couple stood close—the girl nestled comfortably against the guy’s chest, his arm possessively wrapped around her waist. When they noticed us, the guy gave a slightly sheepish smile but didn’t lower his hand.

Newlyweds, clearly.

Gavin stepped in first. As he turned, his dark, intense gaze briefly swept over my waist.

The girl was bright and friendly. She looked at me and asked, “We live upstairs! Haven’t seen you and your husband before. Did you just move in?”

I caught a flicker of amusement in Gavin’s eyes as I shook my head vigorously. “Oh no. He’s my neighbor. My husband doesn’t live here.”
