Betrayed I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 140

A few days later, I was at the clinic as usual.

The air was thick with the approaching New Year festivities. While most other departments were seeing a trickle of patients, mine continued to be fully booked the second appointments opened up.

Knowing everyone was eager to get home for the celebrations, I did my best to accommodate. For patients whose conditions allowed it, I held off on scheduling any immediate treatments. I prescribed their medications and sent them on their way, hoping they could get back to their families a little

sooner.

Elara, remember to come straight to the house after your shift, alright?

Midafternoon, my mentor’s wife, called me.

I couldn’t help but smile. It’s Professor’s birthday. Even if you didn’t invite me, I’d still be shamelessly inviting myself.

Every year for his birthday, the Professor and his wife insisted I celebrate with them. For the last couple of years, Elias had joined the tradition too.

With their own son living abroad, I’d become like a second child to them.

Your teacher will be so happy to hear that, her voice warm with affection. She always said she loved how thoughtful I was. We’re at the grocery

store now. Is there anything special you’d like to eat?

I slipped easily into my wellpracticed, dutiful role. It’s the Professor’s birthday. Whatever he likes, I’m happy to have a bite of.

Alright then. Just come over with Elias once you’re done at the clinic.

Will do,I replied obediently before hanging up and calling up the next patient.

Elias had a meeting to attend, so after I finished up, I got into my car, cranked the heat, and waited for him in the parking lot. I’d been pulling too many late nights recently, trying to push the drug development project forward. The warmth washing over me brought a heavy wave of exhaustion

with it.

Elias was still about twenty minutes out. Might as well just close my eyes for a minute, I thought. I had just reclined my seat to a comfortable angle when a sharp rap on my window made me jump.

My eyes flew open. Amelia was standing outside my car, her face a mask of fury.

I rolled down the window, my expression weary. What do you want?

Did you say something to Zane?she demanded, her voice tight with anger.

I don’t know what you’re talking about.I knew she was referring to the clover necklace.

But I’d decided to play dumb. The memory of what she’d pulled at the hotel was still fresh, a cold knot of anxiety in my stomach. I wanted no further part in whatever mess she and Zane had.

Don’t play stupid with me,she snapped, her brow furrowed in frustration. I’m talking about the clover necklace. Did you, or did you not, mention anything about it to Zane?

No.My voice was flat and cold. Why would I bring it up with him? He’s always taken your side. Does it even matter to him if the necklace was really yours, or if you just snatched it from someone else?

I had told Zane the necklace wasn’t hers.

And yet, just the other day, there they were, attached at the hip, shopping together like nothing was wrong.

Really? She eyed me with deep suspicion, not quite believing me.
