Betrayed I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 178

**TITLE: Pushing the Edge 178**

Back then, I could have done something to prevent it.

That note? Did he genuinely believe he could just snap his fingers and expect me to fall back into line, a perfect image of obedience?

The world doesn’t function that way.

Zane was acutely aware of his misstep. He opened his mouth, ready to voice his thoughts, when his phone buzzed insistently, breaking the tension in the air.

He glanced at the screen, a flicker of urgency crossing his features as he answered without hesitation. “What is it?” His tone was clipped, and I could sense the gravity of the conversation even though the other side remained a mystery to me.

“Boss.” The voice on the other end was muffled, but I could see Zane’s expression shift, his eyes narrowing dangerously, like a predator honing in on its prey. “Then send more people to look! Find her. You must bring her back.”

A chill ran down my spine as I observed the darkening of his face.

What had happened? Who was missing?

Once the call ended, Zane checked the time with a frown. “I’ll take you back to your apartment first. Something urgent has come up.”

“Okay.” A wave of relief washed over me, surprising me with its intensity. I could be quite agreeable when it suited my needs. “If you’re in a rush, I can just take a taxi back.”

He shook his head firmly. “No. I’ll see you home first.”

I didn’t press the matter any further, but I could feel the car accelerate, the engine roaring as if it too sensed the urgency of the situation.

Moments later, we arrived at the entrance of my building. As soon as I stepped out, the sleek black Maybach melted into the shadows of the night, leaving me standing alone in the chill of the evening.

A biting wind whipped around me, making me pull my coat tighter against the cold. I turned to make my way into the complex, my mind racing with questions about Zane’s phone call.

I was nearly at my building’s door when a figure emerged suddenly from the darkened landscaping, startling me so profoundly that my legs felt like jelly beneath me.

Under the dim glow of the yellow streetlight, the woman’s hair was a wild tangle, and an indescribable odor clung to her, making my stomach churn.

It was Amelia.

An Amelia who appeared to be teetering on the edge of madness.
