Chapter 18
Perfect.
Right in the forehead.
The blood flowed way faster than it had when I’d taken that tumble down the stairs.
Zane looked utterly shocked, his body moving on pure instinct.
He shoved me away hard, his voice icy and full of disappointment. “What the hell is wrong with you? Was it all an act? All that gentleness and
kindness?”
I fell to the floor, staring up at him.
Yes. I thought, my own head throbbing. It was all a damn act.
But this time, I couldn’t be bothered to keep pretending.
Zane seemed stunned, as if he hadn’t realized I was hurt so badly that a simple shove would send me sprawling.
“Zane!” Just as he began to reach a hand toward me, Amelia burst into loud, pitiful sobs, pressing her hand against her bleeding forehead. “It hurts so much… I’m bleeding… I think I’m going to faint…”
That snapped him out of it. Without so much as another glance in my direction, he swept her into his arms and strode toward the door.
But he did look back. Just once.
What he saw must have hit him like a punch to the gut.
The girl who’d once dreamed of marrying him was now looking at him with emptier eyes than she’d ever use on a stranger.
It all should be over now. If this continued, I guessed my ending might be the same as Ethan’s?
I thought again of that text from Ethan.
Was it really sent by him before he died? Or was it someone else?
No matter what, it was time for me to make my move.
When I’d thrown the IV bottle, the needle ripped out of my hand. Bright red blood dripped down my pale arm.
I just gripped the bedrail, white–knuckled, and hauled my shaky body up from the floor. Cold sweat trickled down my forehead.
“My God, what happened?” Chloe exclaimed, rushing in. She grabbed a towel to press against my hand while steadying me. “You’re bleeding everywhere! Why didn’t you call a nurse? What were you thinking?”
A faint, bitter smile touched my lips.
All those genuine feelings I’d poured out over the last three years felt… worthless now.
Chloe frowned, helping me back onto the bed. “Start from the beginning. Mary called me saying you fell down the stairs?”
I gathered my thoughts. “I did. But I got my revenge.”
“Huh?”

Chapter 18
“I smashed Amelia’s head open.” I pointed to the shattered glass on the floor. “That was the weapon.”
Chloe acted like she hadn’t heard. She just calmly cleaned up the blood with an alcohol swab and tossed the broken bottle. “What weapon? It’s just a medical accident.”
I almost laughed. “If I killed someone, would you be this calm helping me hide the evidence?”
“No,” Chloe said after a serious moment. “I’d probably help you hide the body first.”
Professional.
But the police never came. Surprisingly, Amelia didn’t press charges.
A few days later, during his rounds, the doctor looked surprised. “You’re healing remarkably fast. A fall that bad, and you’re almost good as new. You can be discharged in a couple of days, but take it easy–no strenuous activity.”
“Actually, doctor,” I said, “I’d like to be discharged tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Yes. I have something important to do.”
I’d studied medicine with Colton for over ten years. He and his wife had been kind to me. I wasn’t about to break my promise to him.
After a quick check, the doctor agreed. “Alright. The cut on your hairline is healed enough to remove the stitches. Good thing your hair covers it, or you’d have a scar.”
“A scar wouldn’t matter,” I said.
“Of course it would!” he protested. “A face like yours? It’d be a crime to scar it.”
A nurse chimed in, “Yeah! And your file says you’re married, but we haven’t seen your husband once. How irresponsible.”
I just smiled faintly. “He’s busy.”
Busy taking care of his precious Mia.
Chloe had confirmed it days ago, cursing Zane’s name when she brought me lunch after seeing him doting on Amelia in the VIP ward.
The next morning, discharge papers signed, I headed down to the parking garage. That’s when I heard his voice from the stairwell.
Zane was on the phone.
“…Do you really think I don’t know her? I never expected she’d lay a hand on Mia.”
A pause. He sounded exasperated. “I never meant for her to suffer alone. And a divorce is out of the question.”
