This Christmas was, for me, the most relaxed one in years.

Making it through a Christmas completely unscathed was a rare feat.

Chloe and I holed up at my place, each doing our own thing. The coffee table was littered with papers scrawled with R&D ideas, and the desk was buried under case files.

I was checking my emails at home when I found another message from that “scammer“–

That afternoon, just as I’d taken the coffee Chloe handed me, my phone, lying face down on the table, buzzed.

I picked it up, looked at the screen, and answered. “Hey, Charles. What’s up?”

Charles’s teasing voice came through the line. “Little Elara, what are you up to right now?”

“Just working from home,” I answered truthfully.

Charles laughed when he heard that. “Come on, it’s the holidays. Stop working. Bring Chloe and come hang out with us. I’m texting you the

address now.”

“I’ll pass. You guys have fun.” All I wanted was a few peaceful days to finally clarify the divorce with Zane.

During this time, the less contact, the better.

Someone said something in the background on his end. Then Charles said, “Zane says if you won’t come, he’ll go pick you up himself.”

“…” I set my coffee cup down. “Fine. I’ll come on my own.”

Charles chuckled, clearly ribbing Zane, who must have been nearby. “Man, what kind of wife–chasing is this? Elara’s clearly still pissed at you.”

I pretended not to hear that. After a quick acknowledgment, I hung up, checked the location he’d sent, and turned to Chloe.

“Chloe, Charles wants us to go hang out at the Cloud Top Club. Wanna come?”
