I started the car, not too concerned. “Staying busy is good.” I honestly preferred a fast–paced rhythm.
As expected, the roads near the airport were a complete nightmare.
By the time we’d collected Clayton and Sylvia and made it back into the city center, the evening lights were already glowing.
Elias had arranged dinner at an upscale Italian restaurant known for its light, fresh dishes. The head chef was from Tuscany, and his cooking was authentically wonderful.
The four of us were led by a host to a private room.
It was spacious and elegantly decorated.
Elias handed the menus to our elders with a warm smile. “Professor, Tonight, you’re in charge of ordering.”
“Sounds good.” Clayton had never been one for false formality with us, and he knew everyone’s tastes well. He quickly decided on a selection of dishes.
I sat down beside Sylvia, doing my best impression of a well–behaved child. “Are you really almost fully recovered?” I was worried the Professor was downplaying it just to keep me from worrying.
Sylvia was amused. “If you don’t believe me, why don’t you give me a check–up right here?”
“Don’t tempt me, I just might!”
Clayton saw our exchange and laughed, looking at Elias.
“Look at her. Now she doesn’t even trust my medical judgment.”
“That’s not it at all!” I would never entertain such a disrespectful thought.
Sylvia jumped to my defense.
“Elara is just concerned about me. You men wouldn’t understand.”
She patted my hand, her thoughts quickly shifting to my own life. “Now that you and Zane are divorced, what are your plans for the future?”
It was a question I knew they’d both been wanting to ask.
They’d probably held back, thinking it was too soon, until now.
If Zane could cheat during the marriage, it was only natural for me to consider moving on.
Elias’s hand, holding his fork poised over a dish, paused almost imperceptibly. He also looked at me, a flicker of something hopeful in his eyes.
I pressed my lips together briefly.
“I haven’t really thought about it yet. I want to focus all my energy on the drug development project first.”
“Here, try this,” Elias smiled, deftly transferring a portion of herb–roasted sea bass onto my plate.
I nodded. “Thanks.”
Sylvia, having caught Elias’s earlier expression, added supportively, “That’s a fine plan. You’re still young, there’s no need to rush. It’s good to concentrate on your work while you figure out what kind of life partner you truly want.”
Chapter 188
“When choosing a husband, character is the most important thing. And if you find it hard to judge well, sometimes it’s better to pick someone you already know well.”
As we finished our meal and walked out of the restaurant, I spotted Zane from a distance.
He’d probably just come from a business dinner. Dressed in a perfectly tailored, custom–made suit, his handsome features stood out starkly. Even just standing casually amidst the crowd, he was like a crane among chickens.
“Professor Clayton, hello.”
Our group was just about to reach the exit when a familiar voice sounded from behind us.
A slight stiffness went down my spine, but I had no choice but to turn around with Clayton and the others.
Clayton looked at Zane, clearly remembering the last time he’d sought him out because of that sister–in–law. His expression was far from friendly. “Is there something you need, Mr. Grayson?”
Zane seemed momentarily taken aback.
Clayton was indeed known for being blunt, but Zane had probably expected him to show a little courtesy, given that he was my husband.
Nevertheless, Zane remained perfectly composed, not appearing the least bit slighted. He smiled lightly. “It’s nothing important. Just wanted to come over and say hello.”
“Thank you for always looking out for Elara.”
As he spoke, he moved naturally to step between Elias and me, trying to separate us, but the person he’d been talking with earlier caught up to him.
The man beamed at Clayton. “Professor Clayton! Do you remember me? I was there when you consulted on the Governor’s wife’s case.”
