His voice carried that signature coolness, a tone that never seemed to waver, no matter the circumstances.

Zane didn’t engage in a debate.

Considering his previous actions—and the fact that he was my brother-in-law—he simply shifted to take a seat across from us, his posture relaxed yet deliberate.

I could sense Marguerite’s annoyance radiating from her like heat from a flame. She shot me pointed glances, her eyes practically urging me to change my seat and settle next to Zane instead.

But I feigned ignorance, burying myself in my meal as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.

As long as Zane continued to deny the divorce, the old woman had no moves left to play.

Zane, ever the diplomat, broke the silence with a reassuring tone.

“It’s perfectly fine. Where Elara chooses to sit is of no consequence. She and Gavin have known each other since childhood—they’ve always shared a close bond.”

The more I had once yearned for Zane to return to the Windsor house with me, the more I found myself dreading it now.

A small sliver of comfort lingered in the back of my mind; Marguerite was unlikely to suspect anything out of the ordinary anymore.

After dinner concluded, I naturally found myself leaving with Zane.

Under Marguerite’s scrutinizing gaze, I had no choice but to slide into the passenger seat, feeling her eyes bore into my back.

Even after we had traveled a considerable distance, I could still feel an unsettling sensation at the nape of my neck, as though a venomous snake was trailing me, watching my every move.

“You barely touched your food tonight,” Zane observed gently, his voice laced with understanding. He was intimately aware of how tense the Windsors made me feel. “Would you like to stop somewhere for a proper meal?”

“No, thank you,” I replied, my tone polite but firm.

The rest of the drive unfolded in silence, the weight of unspoken words hanging heavily in the air between us.

Fortunately, we arrived at my apartment sooner than I had anticipated.

I unfastened my seatbelt and began to exit the car, but Zane’s hand gently wrapped around my wrist, stopping me in my tracks. “I did help you out today. Aren’t you going to invite me up?”

We were both adults, and I was acutely aware of what “invite me up” truly implied.

Without a moment’s hesitation, I resorted to the most dependable excuse in the book: my roommate.

“Chloe is home. It wouldn’t be a good time,” I said, trying to sound nonchalant.

Yet, Zane saw right through my flimsy cover. “Wasn’t she sent on a business trip out of town?”

I froze, caught off guard.

“My assistant spotted her at the airport this morning,” he explained smoothly, an amused glimmer in his eyes.

His gaze softened even further, his intentions unmistakable.

After a brief moment of hesitation, I realized it was time to lay all my cards on the table.

“The truth is, I used you today by asking you to come to the main house. We’re already div—”

“I don’t mind,” he interrupted, leaning in suddenly, closing the distance between us. Our breaths mingled in the confined space of the car.

His voice was soft, almost coaxing. “We’re still married. Helping each other is what we do. There’s no ‘using’ between us.”

Then, without warning, he dipped his head closer.

His lips hovered so close to mine that I could feel the heat radiating from him.

My breath caught in my throat. Panic surged through me, and I pushed him back, scrambling out of the car in a flurry. “Zane, get a grip! I’m going up!”

I dashed into the building, my heart racing, and jabbed at the elevator button with a fervor that would have shattered it if I had my way.

Thank goodness Gavin hadn’t witnessed that little display of panic.

How could I possibly explain my way out of that situation?
