I rubbed my eyes, squinting at the clock. 2 a.m. “Can’t you just call him a car?”

I had an early shift at the hospital.

“Getting a cab outside this club is a nightmare, and all the ride–shares are booked,” Charles said.

A second later, a location pin popped up on my screen.

I dragged my exhausted body out of bed, too tired to bother changing.

I just threw my long down coat over my pajamas and called it good.

Chloe, my permanently nocturnal roommate, stuck her head out of her room at the sound of me moving around.

“Where are you going in the middle of the night?”

“Work call.”

The Graysons provided this apartment plus a five–million–dollar salary–you’d better believe I treated this like a real job.

I snagged Chloe’s keys from the hook in the entryway. “Taking your car.

“Huh? Oh… sure. Go for it.”

What kind of work call? Chloe looked confused, but I was out the door before she could ask, so she just shrugged and went back to her book.

The winter night was biting cold.

I cranked the car heater to max. Charles must have given them a heads–up, because the club host just asked for my name and led me straight to the private room.

Even at this hour, the place was buzzing, the air thick with the scent of expensive liquor.

“Right in here, miss. Mr. Grayson’s party.”

The host swung the door open for me. Out of habit, I said, “Okay, thanks-”

The rest of the words got stuck in my throat.

The room was lit with that tacky, moody lighting.

And there, sitting directly across from the door, was Gavin, half his face cast in shadow. The moment I stepped inside, his dark eyes locked onto me.

Seriously, what kind of curse did I pick up in Germany?

How else do you go years without seeing someone, then suddenly run into him everywhere?

“Elara, you made it!”

Charles waved me over enthusiastically. “Come in.”

Zane’s other friends, James and Will, chimed in with their greetings.

I dug my nails into my palm, forcing a polite smile. “Long time no see. Charles, James, Will…”

My gaze finally landed on Gavin. “…Mr. Windsor.”

The air in the room froze for a second. I could see Charles and the others looking awkward, their eyes darting between me and Gavin.

But Gavin? He didn’t look angry.

A slow smile touched his lips, his eyes never leaving me. “Do I get my own formal title now?”

There was always something about him that got under my skin, that made me speak without thinking. “What exactly is our relationship?”

Those were the exact words he’d said to me seven years ago, right before he dumped me with Margaret.

I still remembered every syllable.

The moment the words were out, I averted my gaze.

In the silence that followed, Gavin didn’t respond. His long fingers just tapped a slow, rhythmic beat against the sofa–a gesture that felt unnervingly familiar.

My eyes fell on Zane, passed out on the couch. I turned to Charles for help.

“Charles, can you help me get him to the car?”

“Yeah, of course.”

The atmosphere was beyond awkward now; he was probably just as eager for an escape as I was. Without another word, he hauled Zane up.

How else do you go years without seeing someone, then suddenly run into Gavin everywhere?

He was exactly as I remembered–yet somehow more.

His tall frame seemed to dominate the space even while seated.

That perfectly styled blond hair and those piercing blue eyes, currently locked on me, could make anyone’s breath hitch.

The man always did have a way with words–sharp enough to cut right to the bone. Zane was never any match for him.

Charles bundled Zane into the back seat of Chloe’s car and looked at me.

“You good from here? Want me to ride along?”

I shook my head. “I’ve got it. Thanks.”

“What are you thanking me for?” Charles laughed. “Get going already. Hey, don’t forget my birthday party.”

I really didn’t want to get tangled up with Zane’s crowd again.

“We’ll see when it gets closer…”

“We’ll see“? You went to Will’s thing last month. You’re gonna skip mine?”

“…Fine. I’ll be there.”
