My reply was instant: Okay.

The investigation into Ethan’s death was something I’d asked Chloe to handle quietly. After all, the official ruling was clear–a wingsuit accident. Maybe I should’ve accepted that.

But those two texts I’d received from Ethan himself… they left me with too many doubts.

Until we had solid proof, though, Chloe and I wouldn’t breathe a word to anyone. For our own safety. Just in case Ethan’s death wasn’t an accident

I quickly smoothed my expression and turned back to Sylvia with a smile. “Creamy mushroom chicken? Sounds amazing. I can’t wait.”

“You little foodie. I’ll have Colton make it for you himself.”

I nodded. “Yes, please. It’s been too long since I’ve had Teacher’s cooking.”

I’d started studying medicine under Colton when I was nine. On holidays, I’d come early and leave late. Back then, Gavin would… pick me up.

Later, I learned to come and go alone.

Sylvia had always wanted a daughter when she was younger, but only had a son. When a quiet, well–behaved little girl like me showed up, she took to me immediately.

She knew my tastes perfectly.

“Alright, Focus on your… special projects. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”

Sylvia smiled and closed the door again.

Every time after using my special face masks–okay, they sometimes smelled a bit funky–Sylvia swore her skin looked brighter and smoother, with results that lasted.

Her wealthy friends had even stopped their hydrating facials, pestering her endlessly about what secret product she was using.

A black Maybach glided smoothly down the road.

In the back seat, Amelia clenched her hands. “Zane, what should I say when we meet Professor Wheaton and his wife…?”

“Don’t be too nervous. Professor Wheaton is a good man. With your talent, you should get along fine.”

Zane kept his voice gentle. “But he’s been retired for years–he might not be willing to take on students. Today is just a courtesy visit. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll find another way.”

“He took Elara on, and I graduated from a prestigious medical school. He wouldn’t reject me, would he?”

She’d been a year ahead of Elara, determined to study under Professor Wheaton, but that year he hadn’t wanted new students.

Ethan had helped pull strings, but Professor Wheaton had simply said he lacked the energy.

Then when Elara enrolled, he decided to take students again! And right after she finished her tutelage, he announced his retirement!

She didn’t know what kind of luck that woman had.
