chapter 53
The two girls flushed bright red.
“Elara, what are you talking about?” one snapped. “We were talking about you! Not Mia!”
“Oh, really?”
“Of course!”
They were quick to adjust, putting on a righteous act. “Why would we say anything about Mia? In love, the one who isn’t loved is the real outsider.”
They hadn’t wanted to offend me initially, but now that things had escalated in front of Amelia, they had to pick a side–and everyone in our circle knew I was just the Graysons‘ placeholder. Amelia was Zane’s real love.
Amelia’s tight expression softened instantly. “Elara, they were just joking. With so many people here, let’s not make a big deal out of it.”
My eyes stayed gentle as I casually tapped my phone. A recording from earlier began to play:
“Uh… that sister–in–law of yours! How can she brazenly be a mistress? So shameless, actually appearing in public with your husband so openly…”
The volume was just loud enough–not disturbing the party, but clear enough for Amelia to catch every word.
“Turn it off!”
Being called out so bluntly broke her composure. When I didn’t move, she slapped my hand–hard.
My phone clattered to the floor, screen cracked. A red mark bloomed across my pale skin, and my eyes welled up just enough to look convincingly hurt.
Anyone watching could see I’d been badly bullied–and pitifully so.
Zane frowned and came over, picking up my phone. “What’s going on?”
Amelia wanted to twist the story, but where could she even start? Say I’d defended her, and shed repaid me by hitting me?
Instead, she glared at the two girls. “They were talking behind my back! Saying awful things!”
The girls looked utterly humiliated. Who knew both of Zane’s women would be so hard to handle?
Especially me–I looked easy to push around, but turned out to be a rabbit that bites.
Note to self: never mess with Elara again.
I took my phone back and looked at Amelia, repeating her own words back to her with gentle understanding.
“Amelia, let’s just forget it. Maybe I misunderstood. They were only joking. It’s Charles’s birthday–let’s not make this ugly.”
There I was, phone smashed, hand stinging, comforting the one who’d caused the scene.
Hearing her own lines fed back to her with interest, Amelia looked like she’d swallowed blood–she couldn’t spit it out or choke it down.
She was furious, but with everyone watching, causing more drama would only wreck her image further.
Her nails dug into her palms, but she forced a smile. “You’re right. We shouldn’t stoop to their level.”
Then Zane spoke, tone unreadable. “Apologize.”
