Chapter 69
Hearing him say that didn’t surprise me one bit.
Back when I first decided to marry Zane, he’d tried to stop me the exact same way.
But Gavin was probably born standing at the summit. He never understood that for someone like me, marrying Zane was the best choice I had at the
time.
He also didn’t get that divorce wasn’t something simple for me.
If Zane wanted a divorce and I refused? He had a hundred different ways to make it happen. I might not even see it coming before the divorce papers were stamped and signed.
But me?
As long as the Graysons didn’t loosen their grip and Zane didn’t agree, I’d be trapped in that family for life.
Those years with the Windsors taught me one thing clearer than anything–how powerless ordinary people are in the face of real power and influence.
I didn’t have the energy to explain. A faint smile touched my lips. “But I just can’t bear to leave him.”
There it was again—that look of a lovesick fool, perfected through practice.
Gavin’s face darkened instantly. His voice sounded like it was gritted between teeth. “Elara, did I ever mistreat you in the past?”
He didn’t even wait for my answer. He stubbed out his cigarette and walked away, and I could feel the anger rolling off him with every step.
-Making him angry enough to leave.
That had always been the most efficient way for me to deal with Gavin.
Elias found me not long after. “I thought you’d left.”
“Did everyone else go?”
“Yeah.”
He hesitated. “Zane and his… group left too.”
“Mm.”
I nodded and took my bag from him. “Let’s go, then.”
Elias had been drinking, so I drove him home.
Just before we arrived, he seemed to remember something, “Oh, right–about that Windsor Group project. We have a meeting tomorrow morning, then we’ll need to do some prep work.”
My grip tightened on the steering wheel.
“The Windsors probably didn’t tell you–I can’t be part of this project anymore.”
Besides, I’d pissed Gavin off so thoroughly tonight.
Out of sight, out of mind–wasn’t that what people said?

Elias frowned. “That can’t be right. Windsor Group just finalized the list and sent it over tonight. Your name’s on it.”
1 froze for a second.
Then it hit me–the Windsor Group handled so many major projects. There was no way Gavin personally oversaw every one.
Or maybe he just hadn’t cared enough to check whether I was involved.
I let out a quiet breath. “That’s good.”
Elias smiled. “Not just that. You’re leading the R&D team.”
“Why?”
The question slipped out before I could stop it.
Logically, that should’ve been Elias’s role.
Luckily, he didn’t seem to mind. “Windsor Group’s call. But honestly? It makes sense. You’ve always been better at pharma R&D than I am. You’re a better fit for team lead.”
He wasn’t wrong.
That highly effective proprietary drug our clinic was known for? I developed it.
We’d just put his name on the paperwork to avoid drawing the Windsors‘ attention.
Third–person POV
Because of Elara’s behavior today, Amelia had a knot of anger stuck in her chest.
On the way home, she looked at the silent man beside her: “See, I told you long ago that Elara isn’t as innocent and pure as you think.”
Zane remained silent. Under the influence of alcohol, his temples throbbed with pain.
Elara had indeed gone too far today.
He could indulge her in anything, but what the wife of the Grayson family needed to understand most was maintaining their public image.
“When she gets home tonight, I’ll talk to her.”
“Oh right, Zane,”
Having gotten the answer she wanted, the anger in Amelia’s heart instantly dissipated: “I heard from colleagues today that Elara and Elias are going to participate in some pharmaceutical research and development project, Could you find a way to let me join too?”
“Alright.”
Zane agreed readily: “You’re talented. There’s no problem with you participating. I’ll speak to Elias’s family.”
Amelia moved closer to hug his arm, speaking sullenly: “Do you really think I’m talented? But at the clinic, everyone praises Elara…”
“She’s just been practicing medicine longer than you.”
