Chapter 81
For a moment, I was completely thrown. The shock of his words hit me like a physical blow, and I froze
I paused, as a flicker of something unnamable shot through me–there and gone before I could pin it down.
Whatever it was, it nearly cost me my composure. After a beat of hesitation, I managed a thin smile. “Well congratulations, then.”
“Don’t forget to send me a wedding invite.”
Settling into the car later, a strange, heavy feeling sat in my chest, refusing to shift.
It took me a long while of thinking to finally put a name to it: possessiveness.
It was like when a younger sister watches her older brother get his first serious girlfriend. Suddenly, she’s not his closest confidante anymore. That shift in the relationship… it’s only natural to feel a little off about it at first, right?
Even though Gavin and I had fallen out, we were still family. For years, we’d only had each other.
Now things were distant between us, and he’d found someone truly close to him.
Wasn’t it normal for me to feel a little… something about that?
It was normal. Right?
Yes. This was a perfectly normal reaction.
Having rationalized the entire thing to myself, I gave a firm shake of my head. Yes. Just a normal reaction.
The next morning, a call from the police station jarred me awake.
Regarding Max’s injury, I was the key suspect. They needed me to come in for questioning.
“We spoke with the hospital,” the female officer taking my statement said, her tone calm and even. “The doctor mentioned the victim had already received timely first aid before he was transferred. We understand you were the one who administered it?”
“That was me,” I nodded.
“What’s your relationship to Max?”
“He’s my husband’s nephew.”
“And what is your relationship with his mother, Amelia? Would you say there’s any conflict between you?”
“You mean, are we love rivals?” My voice was flat. “She thinks I’m competing with her for my husband.”
..?”
The officer paused, her pen hovering above the notepad as she tried to process that. “Are you saying she’s involved in an inappropriate relationship with your husband?”
“Your understanding is correct,” I confirmed with a nod.
Habit led her to the obvious conclusion. “In that case, you would have a motive.”
Chapter 81
I stared at her, stunned. “Then your understanding is wrong.“.
