Chapter 88
I didn’t wait for Gavin’s reply. Instead, I picked up my glass and dipped out.
I ended up tucked away in a quiet corner, completely alone–like all the laughter and chatter around me had nothing to do with me. Zane had Amelia. Gavin had Vera. And me? I was the odd one out, totally out of sync with the whole party vibe.
But whatever. At least I could focus on what mattered right then: the food.
Chloe would’ve been totally jealous if she saw all these delicious treats right in front of me. The thought actually made me smile. See? Even when life throws crap your way, you can always find a little something to laugh about–if you’re willing to look.
Just then, Vera walked over.
“Miss Windsor,” she said softly. “We meet again. Do you remember me?”
“Of course,” I replied smoothly. “How could I forget someone as stunning and memorable as you?”
Last time, she introduced herself as Gavin’s assistant. Who would’ve guessed she was also his girlfriend?
Anyone would be shook–Gavin, that cold, razor–sharp billionaire, heir to a financial empire…
actually dating one of his employees? And bringing her into his inner circle?
It’s wild.
But see, I’ve known Gavin longer than most. And I know this about him: when he really cares about someone, rules go out the window. He’ll bend anything–everything–for the person who’s caught his heart.
“Thank you,” Vera said, her eyes sincere. “But honestly… you’re the captivating one.”
I could tell she was trying to get close to me. Maybe she thought I was still someone important to Gavin.
But she’s wrong.
What we had… it’s not like that anymore. And broken things aren’t always worth fixing.
I gave her a polite smile but didn’t keep the conversation going. Outside of business, I don’t think it’s my place to get cozy with Gavin’s love interest.
Vera picked up on my vibe and didn’t push it–just smiled back gently before she was quickly swarmed by a flock of high–society ladies.
Most of them were dying to hear her “secret” for landing an untamable catch like Gavin.
Honestly? So damn boring.
Since when did “bagging a rich guy‘ become the ultimate life goal? Whoever said locking down a man equals happiness…. really needs to get a bigger dream.
When the banquet finally wound down, I tried to slip away, but Victoria asked me to stay and help see off the guests. By the time I finished, that familiar Maybach was long gone.
The butler looked uncomfortable. “Amelia had an allergic reaction. Mr. Zane took her to the hospital.”
“I see.”
I declined his offer to arrange a car and walked out alone,

Chapter 88
It was better to call my own taxi than be driven partway and have to make excuses later.
“Elara?”
Just as I reached the main road, a Bentley slowed beside me. The window lowered, and Vera frowned. “You’re going back alone? Where’s Mr. Grayson?”
I turned. Behind her, I could see Gavin in the shadows of the back seat, eyes closed, his profile sharp and detached, as if completely uninterested.
“He had an emergency,” I said.
“Then get in. We’ll take you back.”
I’shook my head. “It’s fine, I’ve already called a car-”
“It’s late. It’s not safe for a woman to take a taxi alone. Your brother would worry.”
Before I could protest again, she was out of the car, opening the passenger door and gently pushing me inside.
Gavin’s bodyguard was driving.
Gavin and Vera were in the back.
I was in the front.
The arrangement felt… off. Like I was the extra child in a new family.
