Pushing the Edge 94
With that, I’d had enough. I shut the car door firmly, cutting off whatever she meant to say next.
What Amelia said was true, and I couldn’t deny it.
Even if Zane knew Amelia had harmed her own son to this extent, he’d still clean up her mess.
That was true, blind devotion.
By the time I reached the lab, Vera had brought over plenty of afternoon tea–enough for everyone on the project.
The supervisor called us all to the common area. Understanding the importance of team bonding, I went along.
Unexpectedly, Vera gently pulled me aside as soon as I arrived. “Elara, are you alright after last night? Gavin can be sharp with his words sometimes.”
“I’m… fine,” I said, a little taken aback by her sincerity. “Thank you for the afternoon tea.”
“Why be so polite?” She smiled warmly, then glanced meaningfully at the three men on my team. “Don’t underestimate Elara just because she’s a woman. You’d do well to cooperate fully with her.”
“Vera,” I said softly, pressing my lips together. “You really don’t have to look out for me like a sister. My relationship with Gavin… isn’t what you think.”
“Then what is it?” Her smile didn’t fade. “Besides, I can see he does care about you.”
Before I could respond, she handed me another slice of cake, her eyes gentle. “No matter how Gavin is, I feel you and I get along well.”
I didn’t refuse. “Thank you.”
It was clear Vera had deep connections within Windsor Group. Showing appropriate respect was only wise.
Near the end of the day, a receptionist suddenly came to find me, a playful tone in her voice. “Team Leader Windsor, your husband is here to pick you up.”
“My husband?”
“Yes, he said his name is Zane.”
I was stunned. What was he doing here now? “Tell him to wait. I’ll leave when I finish my work.”
I wrapped up what I was doing before finally heading out.
Zane stood there in a sharp three–piece gray suit, having just finished a work call from one of the waiting area sofas.
When he noticed me, his gaze softened. He ended the call, stood, and walked toward me.
“Finished for the day?” His tone was warm, steady–as if the tension between us days before had never existed.
I avoided his eyes. “Why are you here?”
“As your husband, do I need a reason to pick up my wife?” He took iny bag from my hands, his voice calm. “Besides, I wronged you. I owe you an apology.”
I paused, finally looking up at him. “Actually, whether you apologize or not… it doesn’t matter anymore.”
