After lunch, Richard invited Adrian to his study.
Evelyn took Isabel to the orchard.
“Do you want to take some fruit back with you? It’s all homegrown, completely organic and pesticide-free.”
Isabel declined. “It would be a hassle to carry.”
Evelyn teased, “Don’t tell me that after the deal is done, he won’t even let you use the private jet.”
Isabel didn’t deny it.
Evelyn said, “I have a private jet. I can send you back. Take whatever you want. It’s not like I have much else to offer.”
Isabel still refused. “I don’t even know when I’m going back yet. If I take it now, it’ll just sit in the hotel.”
“Then just take a few to eat at the hotel.”
Evelyn picked some grapes and apples for her. “By the way, now that you’re divorced, do you want to come work with me?”
“I can fund a lab for you.”
Isabel smiled. “Not just yet. I need to handle some things back home first.”
She paused. “His grandmother has my mother’s heart. I want to spend more time with her. Plus, she’s using my medication, and I need to monitor her constantly, just in case Selena tries to use her as a test subject again.”
“No way,” Evelyn said, shocked. “That’s his own grandmother. Is he choosing love over family?”
Isabel suspected Adrian hadn’t gone that far. It was more likely that Selena had convinced him she had a cure.
“I don’t care what they do, but as long as I’m alive, I will protect Old Mrs. Blackwell.”
Evelyn hugged her. “You have me now, you know. Remember, no more carrying everything on your own. If you need something, just say it. What’s the point of our friendship if you keep everything bottled up?”
Isabel nodded. “When I need you, I’ll ask.”
They finished picking fruit and headed back. Adrian and Richard had also finished their discussion.
“Feel free to visit anytime,” Evelyn said, taking Isabel’s hand. “I feel like I’ve known Mrs. Blackwell forever.”
Isabel played along. “Now that the partnership is established, I’m sure there will be many opportunities.”
After her line, she gave Evelyn a quick hug, then bent down to get into the car.
Adrian also shook hands with Richard and bid him farewell.
The car pulled away from the estate.
