He thought she had a point.
So he had insisted on meeting Mrs. Blackwell.
He just hadn't expected there to be two of them.
After his wife’s explanation last night, he more or less understood.
One was a non-blood-related sister, and the other, Isabel, was the real wife—though they were on the verge of divorce.
Richard always listened to his wife, so he had agreed to set this up.
“Mr. Blackwell, your relationship with your wife doesn’t seem to be very good.”
Adrian replied calmly, “We’ve had some disagreements recently. What couple doesn’t argue?”
Richard paused before saying, “I’ve never had an argument with my wife.”
Adrian’s hand, holding the teacup, faltered. “Then I still have much to learn.”
Richard pressed on. “Mr. Blackwell, you’ve been married for six years. Haven’t you figured out how to maintain a stable marriage and a harmonious relationship with your wife?”
“My wife and I are newlyweds. We waited until she finished her studies to get married. Although we’ve only been married for three years, we were together for a long time before that. I once met a fellow countryman who said long courtships were a bad idea, but my wife and I have always been very much in love, without any fights or conflicts.”
Adrian had been about to counter with the short length of Richard's marriage.
But Richard had cut him off at the pass.
He thought for a moment and said, “We skipped the dating phase and got married first, so we’re still in an adjustment period.”
Richard’s voice grew animated. “Ah, I know! Marry first, love later. My wife loves reading those kinds of novels. The couple always ends up unable to get divorced.”
He continued, lost in his own thoughts, oblivious to the change in Adrian's expression. “At first, the hero doesn’t like the heroine. The heroine gives so much but gets no love in return, so she asks for a divorce. But as soon as she asks for a divorce, the hero falls in love with her. I don’t get it, but my wife loves it, so I’m trying to understand. I think that’s how we can continue to love each other better.”
“…”
Adrian decided not to pursue the topic. “I heard you own a prize horse, Mr. Richard. Perhaps you could show me?”
Richard stood up. “Do you know horses, Mr. Blackwell?”
