Isabel walked over and said bluntly, “It’s impossible for me to cook. Tell me what you want to eat, and I'll have Martha bring it over.”

Oliver immediately turned his head away, refusing to look at her.

“Auntie Selena, can you cook for me?”

Before Selena could answer, Adrian said, “She's weak right now. She can't cook.”

After speaking to Oliver, he turned to Isabel, his voice turning cold. “Go back to Halcyon Hills Residence. Martha can help you there.”

Just as Isabel was about to speak, he added, “It’s just making a little food. How hard can it be? Are you really going to hold a grudge against a child?”

Isabel couldn't be bothered to argue.

She didn't believe for a second that Oliver would starve just because he couldn't have a meal cooked by her.

She hadn't wanted to be here in the first place, so she simply turned and left.

On her way out, she stopped by the restroom.

She overheard some people gossiping.

“I was on the ambulance call today. The kid was making such a fuss that his own mother got angry, ditched him, and just walked off the ambulance, leaving him with us.”

“That's so irresponsible.”

“I know, right? That's why the kid kept saying his mom was mean and that he wanted his ‘Auntie Selena.’ I didn't know who that was until we got to the hospital, and there she was, waiting for him. She was running around, taking care of everything so thoughtfully. And she's sick herself, but she never left the kid’s side. No wonder the child feels that way about his real mom.”

“Is this Auntie Selena the stepmom?”

“Shh, it's better not to talk too openly about the Blackwell family's affairs. It’s complicated with those powerful families.”

When Isabel emerged from the stall, the two nurses jumped in surprise.

She, however, was perfectly calm. She rinsed her left hand, dampened a paper towel, and slowly wiped her right hand.

As she left, she said with a smile, “You're right. The stepmother is better than the real thing.”
